BLURB

For years, Blake the Snake, as he was known to his Alpha Chi Gamma brothers, took pictures of the conquests of auction winners having sex with their “prizes” at the fraternity’s annual Spring Bacchanalia. It was all in fun, until he stopped a young woman from being raped by the football player who had won her.

From that moment on, Blake Bombay’s life changed forever. He became obsessed with Kendra Kensington, and worked tirelessly to keep her safe. While watching her from afar, he plotted and planned for the day when she would be his. Trouble was, she didn’t know it. She never saw his face that night or learned his name. But that didn’t matter to Blake. She was his. She had always been his, and one day she would be his forever.

EXCERPT

“Oh, wait. What have we here?” He turned her around so her back faced him, and brushed his hand across her soaking wet slit. “Oh, Kendra…”

There was no answer. She couldn’t even moan. She was lost in the heady sensations once more of his hands on her, caressing her in exactly the right way to bring an orgasm close. He played with her clit, teasing it until Kendra’s moans grew loud, and she pushed back against him, wanting more.

“What should I do with you, you naughty girl?”

Oh, what a question! “Anything you want.”

His soft chuckle sent a thrill racing through her. “You might regret saying that.”

“Not a chance.” Every cell in her body tingled with desire.

When he lifted her skirt, he brushed his hand over her ass cheeks, alternating them. “You really do have a beautiful ass.”

“Thank you.” She was out of her mind with need. Nothing existed except his touch on her skin.

The swats on her ass were light at first, but Kendra had to hang onto him once he began. She’d never been so turned on in her life. Her clit contracted in tiny spasms as the strikes grew harder, burning now each time he hit her. But at the same time, Kendra didn’t want him to stop. Her climax inched closer when she flexed her Kegel muscles, sending shockwaves of desire racing through her groin and out to her fingers and toes.

“Let’s see how much you like this.” He brushed his fingers over her labia. “Oh, wow. I’d say a lot.”

The giggles turned to moans when he pushed two fingers into her pussy. Blake kissed her neck as he finger-fucked her, his thumb now rubbing her clit in time to his thrusts. She clutched his arm for support as a crazy orgasm began, and when he realized what was happening, he bent her over the table until her she rested face down on the surface. Her torso was supported, but her ass was bare.

“Please don’t stop, Blake.”

“I won’t, sweetheart.” He continued moving his fingers in out of her until the climax finished. She was so wet, Kendra heard slurping sounds when he finally removed his digits from inside her pussy.

“Oh, fuck.” Blake spanked her a few more times on each cheek, harder this time, before she heard the sound of a zipper. “I can’t wait, Kendra. I’ve never done anything so fucking sexy in my life.”

The tip of his dick rubbed her ass cheeks, and Kendra was certain she’d go out of her mind long before he got it inside her. He ran one finger along the crack of her ass.

“I’m going to fuck you right here, on this table. What do you think about that?”

“Yes. Please!

“Oh, Kendra…” He grasped her right hip and slid his cock into her pussy, groaning loudly. Kendra cried out in pleasure as he slammed into her. His thrusts were quick and powerful, and she loved it. Being taken like this, still fully clothed and bent over the dining room table, was the kinkiest thing she’d ever done.

While David Bowie sang about his China girl, Blake fucked her like a runaway train. When he massaged her clit again, another climax tore through her, making her dizzy with its intensity.

“Kendra … oh my God, this feels so damn fantastic!”

 inbondsoftheearth

Would you defy God, for love?

In Bonds of the Earth is the new paranormal erotic romance by Janine Ashbless, and is the second in the Book of the Watchers trilogy.

Author: Janine Ashbless

Publisher: Sinful Press

Release date:  March 1st 2017

Broad at the shoulders and lean at the hips, six foot-and-then-something of ropey muscle, he looks like a Spartan god who got lost in a thrift store. He moves like ink through water. And his eyes, when you get a good look at them, are silver. Not gray. Silver. You might take their inhuman shine for fancy contact lenses. Youd be wrong.

Janine Ashbless is back with the second in her Book of the Watchers trilogy, In Bonds of the Earth.

Milja Patek’s bloodline were sworn to guard the fallen angel imprisoned beneath their family church, until Milja fell in love and set him free. Now she has to learn to navigate her new life as wife and plaything to Azazel.

Angel or demon, protector or tyrant, right or wrong, Everything Milja once knew has been flipped upside down and all she can do is follow her heart, even if that means waging war against Heaven and releasing the rest of the fallen.

Unafraid to tackle the more complex issues surrounding good and evil in mainstream religion, Janine has created a thought-provoking and immersive novel which sets a new standard for paranormal erotic romance. The first in the series, Cover Him With Darkness, was released in 2014 by Cleis Press and received outstanding reviews.

Blurb:

“I will free them all.”

When Milja Petak released the fallen angel Azazel from five thousand years of imprisonment, she did it out of love and pity. She found herself in a passionate sexual relationship beyond her imagining and control – the beloved plaything of a dark and furious demon who takes what he wants, when he wants, and submits to no restraint. But what she hasn’t bargained on is being drawn into his plan to free all his incarcerated brothers and wage a war against the Powers of Heaven.

As Azazel drags Milja across the globe in search of his fellow rebel angels, Milja fights to hold her own in a situation where every decision has dire consequences. Pursued by the loyal Archangels, she is forced to make alliances with those she cannot trust: the mysterious Roshana Veisi, who has designs of her own upon Azazel; and Egan Kansky, special forces agent of the Vatican – the man who once saved then betrayed her, who loves her, and who will do anything he can to imprison Azazel for all eternity.

Torn every way by love, by conflicting loyalties and by her own passions, Milja finds that she too is changing – and that she must do things she could not previously have dreamt of in order to save those who matter to her.

In Bonds of the Earth is the second in the Book of the Watchers trilogy and the sequel to Cover Him With Darkness.

Excerpt:

“Milja?”

Roshana? I spun so quickly on my new heels that I lost my balance and, toppling, clipped my glass against a display case. My champagne flute shattered at the stem. “Oh crap!” I yelped—and looked up into a face that wasn’t Roshana’s at all. The face of the man I least wanted to ever see again in all the world.

The least, and maybe the most.

It was Egan.

Egan Kansky. The man who’d saved me and betrayed me. The man who’d snatched me from under the noses of my Orthodox enemies and taught me to trust him, only to try to deliver me to his own masters.

Egan, who’d done his best to bury Azazel for an eternity of torment again, for the good of us all. I’d let him hold me as we slept together. He was the gentlest, most caring man I’d met apart from my own father—yet I’d seen him coldly shoot dead the thug who tortured me.

Egan: Irish-American, ex-military, now Vatican agent. He’d stepped in front of a bullet for me.

There were no words for the confusion of feelings in my breast right at that moment, seeing him there before me. His square face looked a little more lined than I remembered, but his sandy-blond hair still stuck out over his forehead and his eyes were still that blue strangely flecked with gold; eyes for staring at horizons. The formal evening jacket suited him; way more than it would Azazel, say.

“Egan?” Go away, go away, I can’t bear to see you, I thought, but the words refused to rise to my lips. “What are you doing here?”

I was actually shaking.

He didn’t answer. Instead he sank to his knees before me. It took a moment for me to realize what he was doing; picking up the pieces of my broken glass. Standing again, he dropped them deftly on the tray of the waiter who’d hurried over. “Thank you,” he told the young man.

“I’m sorry,” I gabbled to the waiter, “I’m not used to wearing heels.”

“No problem, madam. May I get you another glass?”

“No… No, thanks.”

The distraction reset our conversation. As we looked back at each other Egan smiled, tentatively. “Hello, Milja. How are you? You’re looking…very well.”

I blushed, wishing that the saleswoman hadn’t persuaded me into a dress quite so short or so tight, wishing that my hands weren’t trembling. “I’m good.”

“I’m glad to hear it.”

The depths of all that we dared not speak about yawned like the Grand Canyon. “You made it out then?”

“Yes. I walked.” He gestured with open hands. “Then hitch-hiked.”

I brushed my fingers over my face, wanting to hide.

“How’s your hand?”

Of course. The last time he saw me I’d just had my finger broken. “It’s fine. He fixed it.” I didn’t have to say Azazel’s name.

Egan nodded, sucking his lips in. “Are you still with him?”

“You don’t need me to tell you that, one way or another,” I said, finding some backbone at last. “Your people will have been keeping an eye on me, I assume.”

He looked suddenly uncomfortable. I got the distinct impression he was winging it. “I’ve recused myself from that particular mission.”

“Meaning what?”

“Sure, I told my superiors that I couldn’t in good conscience accept their plans for you.”

Imprisonment. Breeding. The murder of my children. “I bet that was a fun conversation.”

He grimaced. “That it wasn’t. But they accepted it. I’m not here on their behalf.”

“You’re not planning to kidnap me, then?”

He shook his head. “No. You won that round, Milja. You were right and I was wrong. You know how I feel about what happened.”

“No.” I shook my own, defiantly. Let him spell it out. “I’ve no goddamn clue.”

“That it’s not right to do a heinous evil for the sake of doing greater good later. I slipped into error while spending time with you, unacceptably so.”

“What—liking me? That was an error?”

“No.” His pale eyes narrowed with pain. “Betraying your trust. You were an innocent. I ask your forgiveness.”

That was it: his apology. I stared at him mutely.

“Liking you…” He blinked and looked over my shoulder. “It wasn’t what I planned. It messed things up, from the point of view of my superiors. But I don’t regret it.”

My eyes stung and my throat felt swollen, but I knew no tears would slip down my face. “Thank you for letting me choose,” I said, my voice a wobbly whisper. “You did let me choose, didn’t you?” Between you and Azazel?

“Yes.”

“I chose him. Now go away. Please.” I turned my back on him, staring blindly into the reflection of the glass case.

From behind, he put both hands on my waist. My world flipped upside down. His breath was on my hair, his warmth against my back. “Milja,” he whispered, his lips soft against my ear, “that’s not forever. You can change your mind.”

If Azazel sees this, I don’t know what will happen.

I shut my eyes, swaying, almost leaning back against him. I wanted him to slip his arms right around my waist. I wanted to turn within the circle of his arms and press my face to his chest, breathing in the warm sweet scent of him.

Here’s the thing, the terrible stupid thing. Azazel loved me, Azazel was powerful as a thunderstorm, and he would protect me from men and angels even if he had to tear the world apart and drown it in blood to do that. But I never, ever felt safe with Azazel. I felt safe with Egan. Even with everything I knew and everything I guessed, even in moments of horror and rage, there was a part of me that instantly and instinctively fitted into the shield of his arm, that felt like this is my home, I belong here. I could think of no other way to articulate it to myself.

“Choose again,” he whispered, sending shivers from the whorl of my ear down my neck and my spine, right inside me. “Please—come outside with me. We need to talk.”

Jessica Morris has a secret that could get her killed. Hiding in plain sight, pretending to be normal, is all she’s ever known. And even though she’s been lucky so far, she knows that she can’t hide in Shifter Falls forever. Getting involved with the town sheriff is the last thing she needs, but lately it’s all she can think about.

Novak Porter has watched Jessica since the first day she came into town. He suspects that, like everyone else in Shifter Falls, she’s got a skeleton or two in her closet. She’s nervous around him, and for years he’s forced himself to give her time. But when a chance encounter throws them together for more than five minutes, Novak decides he’s tired of waiting. He’ll do whatever it takes to keep her around. Convincing her to work for him is easy, but getting her to believe in happily ever after might be a little more difficult.

pagebreakexcerpt

Jessica turned to the voice in the darkness. The sexiest voice on the face of the planet. “Sheriff,” she said, her pulse increasing when she turned to look at him.

He looked as if he had been built of stone, and again she wondered just exactly what sort of shifter he was. No one seemed to know, or be willing to share, which was very strange in a town like Shifter Falls. Then again, she didn’t let anyone know what she was, either, so it could just be a privacy thing.

“I’m not sure what’s going on, but suddenly all the electronics inside the car went completely dead. The lights, dash, everything. I’m afraid it’s the alternator, since it has a brand-new battery.” She might be a lot of things, but she wasn’t completely stupid. “And I think that Jagger’s cub swiped my cell phone, again, so do you think you could maybe call a tow for me?” She shook her head. “That little guy gets me every single time. I swear he’s taken more cell phones off of me than I can count. Phi is never able to find them, so there’s no telling what he does with them.” She was snickering as she said that. She didn’t know why she was talking so much, but she was.

The sheriff was watching her intently and didn’t seem all that bothered by her random rambling. He merely pulled out his cell and put in a call for a truck. “Mick will come get your car. He said to leave the keys on the passenger front tire since he might be a while. They had to pull a couple cars from a slough after some young twits decided that drag racing with their parents’ cars was a good plan. Come on, I’ll give you a ride home.”

She whistled. “Oh boy. I bet there are going to be some kids in serious trouble about right now. Thanks for the offer of the ride.” She grabbed her purse, locked the car, and put the keys on the front passenger tire as she had been instructed. “You’ll probably be going out of your way a bit. I live at twenty-nine Forest Acre Road.” It was a dirt road surrounded by forest and she loved it. Nature called to her, and at least there she didn’t have to worry about nulling any abilities as she typically did when she was near other witches.

“No worries at all. It keeps me out of the station until the parents have finally wound down to a dull roar and the kids have had a few minutes for everything to sink in. Anyhow, I think that an hour’s worth of stewing before I arrive to come up with some interesting charges might help the situation. By then I’ll know if the lawyers have actually been called in or not and can figure out how to play this to keep the kids from doing something worse down the line.” The sheriff held her door for her, then shut it when she settled into her seat. A minute later he was setting out reflective markers behind her car before sliding in behind the wheel to take her toward town and home.

“You are a good man. Too bad you can’t keep a secretary to save your gorgeous ass.” She felt her face turn red from heat when she realized she’d blurted that out. “Crap, ignore me. I don’t know what I’m saying.” She cringed, but then shrugged. Since it was too late to take her candid observation back, she pressed on. “Well, from what I understand, you have gone through thirteen of them inside of three months. That’s outstanding right there.”

He leveled a look on her she couldn’t read. She was only thankful he seemed to ignore her initial comment and it allowed her cheeks to cool. “I have a specific way I expect things to be done. And, I admit, my temper can get the best of me. Everything we do can be called into question inside a courtroom. If even one I isn’t dotted right, or a T was missed being crossed, that is potentially a dangerous offender being allowed out on the street due to clerical error. Unacceptable in my book so, yes, I have some impossibly high standards I expect to be carried out by every man and woman in the department.”

“No, not impossibly high standards. They are perfectly reasonable. The way that everyone made it sound you were seriously a neat freak nut job, but what you’re saying doesn’t sound like that at all.” She understood the importance of perfect record keeping, of ensuring that everything was where it should be at all times. “When the council took me on as their secretary, I had to redo a hell of a lot of stuff because the person before me couldn’t seem to understand that paperwork is filed by number then letter. Idiots.” She smirked and looked over at him. “I guess I have high standards as well. Then again since I’m a witch without abilities, I have to be able to contribute somehow, right? Especially with my mother’s coven proclaiming me to be nothing but a human.” That’s what all of Shifter Falls thought of her, and she was happy to keep it that way. When she’d first started out on her own, she’d wondered if it wouldn’t have been smarter, and safer, to try to hide even the fact that she’d been born into a witch family. Ultimately she’d decided that it was better to stick as close to the truth as possible. So she never tried to hide the fact that she had been born to witch parents. It was unlikely that she would ever run into anyone from her old coven, but on the off chance that she did, she didn’t want to arouse suspicion by being caught in a lie. Besides, being known as a witch without powers—therefore, more or less, human—kept her just as safe as if she’d tried to pass herself off as a normal human.

“I’m glad you understand. Few do,” he muttered. “I think the council foisted their rejects my way for some form of payback. They all loved the idea when the mayor had me run for office and I won by a landslide, but the minute I arrested the first council member and wouldn’t take a bribe, they started to wonder. Told them the same thing I told the mayor when he hired me—I was going to run things my way, and if they found someone that could run against me and get elected that would be the only way they’d get me out of that seat. They haven’t had any luck yet.”

Jess knew it was because the sheriff was respected by every citizen in the Falls as well as the other two cities that made up their exceptionally small county. While not everyone agreed with his methods and strict by-the-book ways, they liked how he’d cleaned up and kept the area protected from a drug problem several years back when he’d first taken the position.

“You cleaned up the area. No one would run against you. You’re too good at your job, so it is what it is.” She shrugged. “You are strict and you can be an ass from what I’ve been told, but then again there are a lot of falsehoods that fly through Shifter Falls, aren’t there?” she asked with a smile.

“True enough. The trick is determining what’s truth and what’s lie in everything that goes around town. It’s amazing what one can discover the moment they find that tiny thread and give it a tug. After all, there’s not a soul in this town that is exactly who they appear to be on the surface once you dig down a little further.”

Excerpt:

From the very second I laid eyes on him, it was clear he was unconventional. If I’m being truthful, I thought he looked like a complete nutter—someone I’d probably cross the road to avoid. Even in the daytime. He was tall and skinny, with a shock of black hair—still apparent under his hairnet—and pale skin. Kind of like Edward Scissorhands. Only—mercifully—without the scissors for hands part. A vine-looking tattoo began at his left wrist, worked its way up his arm, then snaked beneath the sleeve of his T-shirt…to who knew where?

Oddly, even though I mentally kicked myself for thinking it, I found myself wanting to find out. Did it stop at his upper arm, his shoulder? Did it continue over his back, his chest, twine its way around a pectoral, sneaking in toward the nipple? Or even farther south, perhaps?

Even if you took Mr. Unusual out of the equation, there was nothing normal about the situation I found myself in. After all, what recent graduate of law school finds themselves volunteering in a soup kitchen? A recent graduate who lost her head—and heart—over a bad boy, that’s who.

Most people seem to think that those who study law are smart. Super smart, actually. There’s a reason for that—folks who study law are smart. If they pass all the exams, that is. And I did—with distinction. Which makes me clever on paper, I suppose, but apparently lacking in common sense, or perhaps I just have severely poor judgment. Or both.

However you want to look at it, I fucked up. Big time. I fell for the wrong guy, trusted him, and ended up caught up in something that got me arrested.

It could have been the end of my law career. Before it had even started, and after all those years of education—not to mention a rather large chunk of my parents’ cash. Fortunately, they’ve got plenty of it, due to my daddy’s successful career. He works in law, too, which, luckily for me, means he’s got friends in high places.

So it was less voluntary work, more community service. Otherwise known as do-this-or-you’ll-get-a-criminal-record-and-kiss-your-career-goodbye.

Fixing my potential glittering career in my mind, I took a deep breath and crossed the industrial-looking kitchen, heading toward him. He looked utterly at home chopping carrots—he was like one of those chefs you see on the telly, his hand and the knife he gripped moving so fast they were almost a blur. I cringed at the thought of trying such a thing. Never mind the end of my career, it’d be the end of my fingers.

Approaching cautiously—I didn’t want to startle him and cause a horrific accident—I waited until he’d finished his carrot before speaking. “Um, hi.”

Turning quickly, still with his knife in his hand, he smiled. “Ah, hello. You must be Penny.”

For a moment, I was so caught up in his eyes that I couldn’t reply. Fortunately, I managed to get a grip before I was the one who was a nutter. “Um, yes, that’s right. I’m here to help out.”

As though suddenly realizing he still held the knife, he glanced at it in his hand, then quickly put it down on the counter. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to greet you with a blade! I’m so used to using the things that it’s like they’re an extension of my arm.”

Hmm, so maybe he’s Edward Knifehands. I suppressed a shudder.

Those stunning eyes—such an unnatural yet beautiful blue—twinkling, he held out his now empty hand. “I’m Maddox Black. Pleased to meet you. And very pleased to have you here.”

We shook. As we did so, the heat that had sparked inside me when we’d made eye contact began to intensify.

Christ, no, Penny. You just ditched one bad boy. The last thing you need to do is swap him for another one.

He refuses to be owned. She won’t settle for anything less…

Natalie has done everything she can to forget the man who gave her the most erotic power exchanges of her life. He wasn’t her first lover, but he was the first to submit to her. McKinley wasn’t a docile submissive. Whenever she pushed him to the edge, he became commanding and domineering. Perfect. She was prepared to give him her heart, but he abandoned her when she needed him the most.

McKinley swore he would never give up control again. But his reclusive existence has eroded his soul so much, there is nothing left but his need for the only woman he ever loved. Back on familiar soil for a St. Patrick’s Day ride with his Riding Irish brothers, McKinley seeks to repair the one relationship he is convinced will cure him of his relentless cravings. This time their reckless games won’t break him.

In the secret dungeon at the clubhouse, memories of their wild past rouse sinfully dirty thoughts. Then one fateful moment leaves two rival clubs in an all-out war where Natalie and McKinley are in the crosshairs. They could end up losing everything—including each other.

Excerpt:
Natalie tried her best not to stare. She also did her best not to slap the man standing in front of her. The one who deserved every form of inventive punishment she could conjure.

Thousands of things she wanted to say danced on her tongue. Instead of unleashing them, she bit each one back, smiled, and sidestepped him without a word. The burn of those unspoken words made her eyes water.

McKinley had once been hers. Utterly and completely. She buried those memories as well as she set the tray on the table along with the assortment of other finger foods she’d transported from the hotel.

This was her vacation. Yeah, it was only to the other side of the island, but to her it was another world. A few days away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki tourism. As hard as she’d been working, she desperately needed the break. And then he’d strutted in. Thrown her world into chaos with that slight, almost smile that made her knees shake and her heart lurch.

When she finally worked up the courage to turn around, she saw McKinley stroking the ring of condensation puddling around the bottom of his glass as he stood next to Isla. The movement drew her attention to his hands. His fingers. She’d adored those hands once. Strong enough to hold her in place over his straining erection for however long she’d ordered. Yet patient enough to build her up to the gentlest, most fulfilling orgasm while she denied him.

McKinley’s confident stance filled the space around him. He wasn’t a small man by any means, but he possessed a unique kind of beauty rarely seen with a solid frame better suited for a man twice his size. He also had a rare knack for making his presence known, yet ensuring he was still approachable. She knew what it felt like to have those ropes of hard flesh yield to her command. He’d been an enticing display of a man on his knees. Desperation shining through those gorgeous, multicolored blue eyes. All that aggressive manliness restrained for her, and her alone.

“Natalie.” Her name uttered with buttery softness brought to life every dark fantasy she’d quelled. His voice. God, that decadent voice. Filled with velvet tones that made him sound like he was balls-deep in a woman. Though it was even and level, she noted the hints of strain. He stayed a good ten feet away from her, hands shoved deep in the pockets of his cargo pants.

When had he crossed the room?

Though she saw no sign of nerves, she knew him well enough—intimately enough—to tell he was slightly off kilter finding her at the clubhouse.

“McKinley.” She kept her tone crisp despite her shortened breath and the crazy things taking shape in her body. He’d walked away from what they’d had just as things had started to get interesting. No phone call. No text. Nothing but a silent “fuck you” she still felt the sting of even after all this time.

She wanted him to clasp his hands. Go to his knees. Request permission to speak. But if what she suspected was true, none of the Riding Irish membership knew of McKinley’s preference to submit. Damn it. She was supposed to be done with everything their short, tumultuous relationship represented. Especially when she’d learned after the fact that he’d been on Oahu last year for the annual ride and hadn’t contacted her.

The desire to know what he’d been up to overrode her judgment. She’d regret it in a few days. But she hadn’t lived her life avoiding things she felt badly about later. Too many brushes with death had already taught her time was fleeting. “How have you been?”

“Well enough.”

Which was a hell of a lot better than she could claim. She bit her tongue. Again. “Same here.” She didn’t offer more because she didn’t owe him a damn thing. Five minutes ago, she’d been ready to enjoy a few days off for the St. Patrick’s Day festivities the club had planned. But that had all changed when her past reached out and grabbed her by the throat.

He tapped the rim of his tattered baseball hat, shifting the dark hair brushing his shoulders as he flashed her a half smile. She masked her gut reaction to reach forward and brush away the strands that feathered across his brow. Everything about this powerful man was pure, sweet temptation.

“Can we go talk in private?” He dropped his gaze away from hers. Not quick enough for her to miss the frown. It had cost him to ask.

Silence stretched out. She’d wait him out as long as necessary. Hell, she’d waited around this long. Waited for Danny to pull his dick out of his ass and smarten up about serving his time.

Natalie Conklin was the queen of patience.

McKinley cleared his throat. “I really would like to speak with you alone.”

There. The slightest strain edged his words. “No.”

His head shot up, an instant flare of anger and confusion flashing through his eyes. McKinley wasn’t a man who handled rejection well. She’d toyed with that particular character trait plenty. Especially when she’d realized how much he disliked being told he wasn’t going to get his way.

“Please, Natalie.” His voice lowered, showing the shards of need stabbing at him.

Fuck you, Grant McKinley. She clamped her mouth shut. Dug her nails into her palms. Used the pain to focus her resolve. She would hold firm. She had to because she knew this man had the power to break her.

“You don’t want to talk. You want me to take away reason and logic. Make you feel something again. Just like last time.” She had no responsibility to him. “You want me to strip you of accountability. To take away your ability to choose. To hate-fuck you.” His eyes flashed with heat. Yeah, there’s the truth, you bastard. “But that was your mistake when you chose your male ego over me.”

“You have that low of an opinion about me?”

“Considering the last thing I saw was your bare ass as you walked out on me two years ago—yeah, I’d say that’s exactly what my opinion is.”

He stepped into her so she was forced to angle her face up to look at him. The peppery scent of his aftershave played havoc on her thoughts. On her resolve to stand firm. Emotions permeated the stagnant air, acrid and brittle like spent gunpowder. He was guarded. More than she’d ever seen before. Yet he was also exposed. “I can’t change what I did that day, Natalie. But that doesn’t mean I’m like other men.”

No, you’re certainly not. McKinley was a former Marine who handled explosives during his time in service. As a civilian, he’d rushed into burning buildings. He rode a motorcycle. Liked rough sex. McKinley was a man who wasn’t afraid of danger. And she gravitated right to him.

“I’m not a naive woman. Not like I used to be. Flash that charming smile. Flutter those baby blues. Insist you need to talk to me all day long. It worked once. Got you what you wanted. It won’t happen again.” Her quick descent, guided by his more than capable charms, had already dragged her down once.

He scowled, drawing his eyebrows together. “I know. I don’t deserve—“

“That’s right, you don’t. Good luck during the poker run.” She breezed through the doorway and out into the Hawaiian sunshine. She had her keys in her hand before she made it to the parking lot.

Her plan had been to party it up in the days preceding the ride, then wait at the club with all the other families while the riders made the required stops for the run on Friday. To celebrate their return in traditional Irish fashion. But she couldn’t. Not knowing McKinley was back on the island.

For months, she’d imagined how they’d react when they saw each other. In her mind’s eye, everything had been proper and respectable. He’d kiss her cheek, then go to one knee. Perhaps both. Cross his arms behind his back while he apologized. Profess his undying love for her.

What a load of fuckery.
