This week’s tease comes from the 2nd Canadian Muscle story, Guarding His Anchor.

He exited Charlotte’s office, then headed out the back door and around the corner. He took the stairs to his temporary home, let himself in, and came face to face with two of his best buddies.

But the glares on Marc and Gavin’s faces were anything but friendly. Movement from the corner of the room caught his attention, and Shree stepped into the light, arms crossed, and daggers shooting from her eyes.

Aw, hell.

Let the interrogation he’d been expecting begin.

“I need answers, Frank. A lot of them.”

Frank sighed, closed the door behind him, and headed to the fridge. He withdrew a beer and held one up in offer one to them, which they all declined. After opening the tab, he lifted it and consumed half of it in a couple deep gulps.

He snatched a kitchen chair, turned it, and straddled it, resting his arms over the back. “Let me have it.”

“Why did you come back like this? No forewarning, nothing?” Shree ranted, pacing between him and the sofa where her husband sat. “Charlie deserves better. And going after Sean?”

“Shree, honey,” Gavin interrupted.

“Don’t honey me. This is bogus bullshit. It has to be. Gavin, you’ve known Sean most of your life. You can’t believe he’d shoot Frank.”

“People change.” Gavin glowered. “I hate to say it, but based on the info Frank’s given us, and what I’ve received from my contacts, he’s way under. I don’t think there’s any coming back for him.” Sadness coiled in Gavin’s eyes but disappeared when he caught Frank’s gaze on him.

Frank remained mum. He’d stated his case and given the evidence he had—there wasn’t much else to say. No one else had been there, had stared into the dead eyes of Sean Weber. The man was gone. Completely. A stone-cold killer lived behind that emptiness. Frank had seen it before when he was in the Army. The terrorists he’d once fought against. The destruction of battle, losing children and souls, had him transferring and moving from New Brunswick to the United States at the first opportunity. To change his profession, become an FBI agent to help from home base to stop the bastards and threats to nations, was why he’d wanted to join the bureau.

He’d crossed the border to make a difference. It was a bonus to have citizenship status in Canada, too. The bureau used him in each country, taking advantage of his logic and profiling instincts to the max. Frank was proud of what he’d accomplished in his forty-two years. He’d never turn his back on the job.

“I’m sorry, guys, but the real sad thing of this is Charlie,” Marc argued, fury in his eyes. “I don’t like this back and forth anymore, man. You”—he pointed a finger at Frank—“are not here to see what she goes through after you leave. The sadness takes longer and longer to bounce back every time. We’re friends, buddy, but don’t make me choose sides.” Marc stared him down, his gaze unwavering.

Frank gave him a small nod, understanding what he was saying.

Frank hated leaving every time. Charlotte was … he didn’t really understand it. She calmed him, gave him a different outlook in many ways, but he was a tortured man who didn’t have the options to settle down.

“I agree. Frank, when this is all over, will you stay?” Shree demanded, her hands on her hips.

He couldn’t lie to himself. Staying wasn’t an option. He could never repeat the sins of his father. The abuser, the alcoholic, the bastard who’d gotten off on torture and dominance of his wife and son. Frank had reached the brink of anger and loss of control a few times. It was in him to fall off the edge; he lived with the darkness in his soul for years now, and he would never forgive himself if he hurt a woman someday. Especially Charlotte.

Frank lifted the can and drained the last of his beer. “Probably not.” He stood and tossed the can into the recycle bin.

“Holy shit. You idiot.”

“For fuck’s sake, asshole.”

“You big dickhead.”

Frank welcomed their comments. He was everything they said and more. But they didn’t know him that well. As much as he loved his mother, aunt, and Vikki—the only remaining family he had—he would stay a single man forever.

“I get it. Be pissed off all you want. But also consider, Charlotte will never forgive me for going after Sean.” Frank eyed them, meeting each gaze for a few seconds. “It’s as simple as that.”

“Doesn’t stop you from wanting her, does it, man?” Gavin questioned, brow arched but his gaze sympathetic.

Frank smirked. “Nope, not at all. I’m hard as a stone around her. I’d do anything for her. I would.” Frank locked gazes with Shree. “Sorry, but I have a job to do.”

This week’s tease comes from my upcoming release, GUARDING HIS ANCHOR, the 2nd Canadian Muscle story, which releases February 21st!

Guarding His Anchor is Frank and Charlie’s story. Let’s just say, the few years following Guarding Midnight (Book 1), things haven’t been easy. Frank’s come and gone more times than Charlie cares to count, and Frank has returned once again to turn her life upside down.

And they can’t resist each other…

© Kacey Hammell, 2017
Charlie closed her eyes and leaned against the door. Tonight had resolved nothing. She’d tried to let Neal down easy, but everything she’d said had gone over his fucking head. Confusion rioted in her skull, throbbing non-stop.

A shift of movement caught her attention, startling her. She opened her eyes and lifted her head, standing tall, on the defense.

Oh, for crying out loud!final

All she needed tonight was Frank Shaw in her house, staring at her with anger spitting fire from his eyeballs.

But there he was, eyeing her open collar and cleavage, fists bunched at his sides.

Frustration, sexual and otherwise thanks to him showing up when she least expected, curled around her like molten lava spilling from a volcano.

If he wanted a fight, he’d come to the right place.

“What the hell are you doing sneaking into my house?” she demanded, stomping toward him.

“Calm down. Vikki called, asked me to hang some fucking curtains. She said you were at the bar.”

“Can’t you think up a better excuse than that?”

His eyes roamed over her from head to toe. Damn that spark in his eyes when he gazed at her like that. Anger turned to potent hunger in seconds flat, watching her as if she were the prey and he the hunter … She swallowed hard.

“If I’d known you were home and … busy, I wouldn’t have bothered. Vikki said the back door was open.”

“I’ll talk to her about that.” Charlie sighed, then walked into the kitchen. “Her room is across the hall, last door on the right.”

Undeterred, he followed her. “Hot date, huh?”

“None of your business.” He was the very last person in the world she wanted to discuss Neal with.

He leaned on the island in the center of the room. “I guess Vikki wasn’t even aware you had a date tonight.”

No doubt Vikki didn’t cared anyway. She was Team Charlie and Frank, and Charlie wouldn’t be surprised if her pal had planned the whole thing. Hang curtains, indeed. At this time of night? Without running it past the owner, her roommate? Charlie suspected Vikki was up to no good.

“Doesn’t matter.” Charlie put the last of the wine in the fridge, grabbed a cloth, and cleaned the counters. “You can do it tomorrow when I’m at work. Good-night.” Focused on one spot, she scrubbed hard, hoping he’d take the suggestion.

“You look beautiful.” His soft comment skimmed along her ear as he moved in behind her.

“Frank, don’t. I just had another guy here, for heaven’s sake.”

“Doesn’t matter. It sure didn’t end the way he thought. I know when you’ve been fucked good and satisfied and when you’re not.”

As well as being attractive, he awakens something deep inside that she’d almost forgotten about. Men that can handle Zoe’s busy lifestyle are few and far between. Add to that her very specific sexual appetites and it’s little wonder she’s been single for so long. Is the Viking about to change all that?

Excerpt:

Alexei followed John into the building, a sense of trepidation hanging over him. It was never easy moving to a new place, and as an army brat he’d had more than his fair share of relocating. Dealing with new landlords, new neighbors, new neighborhood. Not to mention the job side of it—new role, new building, new boss…

He’d spent the last month dealing with all that, and now – thanks to the friendship that had sprung up between him and his colleague, John – he was getting back on track with his hobbies, too. John wasn’t a gym bunny, exactly, but he did like to keep in shape, which was why he’d recommended his local sports gym to Alexei when he’d asked.

“Just a bunch of folks keeping fit and trim, letting off some steam,” he’d said. “No posturing, silly competition, or showing off. God, I reckon if someone started posing in front of a mirror in that place, they’d get their arse kicked.”

He’d made the place sound a bit rough and ready, but that was fine by Alexei. As long as it had the equipment he needed, it would suit him down to the ground. It was made all the more attractive by the price – around half of what the more traditional gyms wanted in membership fees. And he only had to pay when he actually attended. He wasn’t sure yet how much working away his new job was going to entail, but it still made more sense to use a place that had a pay-as-you-go system. At least until he got settled.

They passed a reception desk of sorts, which looked like somewhere the building’s owner probably did the admin and accounts. After that, there was a row of seating up against the wall on their right hand side, and the space opened up on their left. Wooden flooring stretched from just beside them to the far end of the long area, and a boxing ring sat in one corner.

Alexei raised his eyebrows. It was a bit rough and ready, but it was well-appointed and clearly well-used. Much better to have a place with regular, dedicated clients than some gleaming, spick and span monstrosity of a gym that nobody ever went to, or went more to lift weights and gaze lovingly at themselves in the mirrors than to actually do a thorough workout.

He continued following John along the carpeted area that ran around the nearest two sides of the wooden flooring, allowing people to access the rooms opposite the entrance without getting in the way of the people using the main space. It was currently taken up by what looked like an all-female kickboxing class. And they were good. He certainly wouldn’t like to piss any of them off—they could definitely handle themselves.

Alexei was just about to look away—he didn’t want them to think he was some kind of pervert for staring—when his gaze alighted on the instructor. She was a petite blonde, with a long, sleek ponytail sitting high up on her head, which swung as she walked from one student to the next, passing comment, suggesting improvements, and so on. He was so mesmerized by her that he forgot all about not staring. In fact, he forgot about pretty much everything, and let out an “ooof!” as he slammed straight into John’s broad, hard back.

“Hey,” John said, turning around and putting a hand on Alexei’s shoulder to steady him. “Look where you’re bloody going, mate. What the hell’s the matter with you?”

Alexei opened his mouth to reply, but his brain refused to supply any words. Instead, his eyes gave him away, as he couldn’t resist another glance in her direction.

Following his gaze, John smirked when he spotted just who had distracted Alexei so much. “The cute blonde, I take it?”

Alexei nodded, his face growing hot at the thought someone might have seen what happened. At the thought she might have seen. “Who is she?”

PALACE OF SCOUNDRELS by NICOLA M. CAMERON

Hello, and thanks so much for having me on today! Palace of Scoundrels is kind of a surprise baby because the first book in the series, Empress of Storms, was supposed to be a standalone until I started getting asked when the sequel was coming out. I am not one to disappoint readers. I’m describing Palace of Scoundrels as “Game of Thrones, except with less violent death and more snark. The wine drinking is about the same, though.” And I already have an outline for Book Three and two novellas in the same universe – whee!

BLURB:

Spring has sprung in the island kingdom of Hellas, and with it come thoughts of young love and fruitful fields. But with no signs of an occupant for the royal nursery, Queen Danaë is starting to worry about her own fertility. Her concerns aren’t helped by the arrival of the legendarily conniving Dowager Queen Atilia of Illium–or the woman’s handsome grandson Prince Marcus, on the run after being accused of poisoning his older brother.

In the neighboring kingdom of Ypres, Danaë’s royal husband Matthias is dealing with dangerous family politics and a wolfish duke who has kidnapped a young noblewoman for immoral purposes. Or has he? Can Matthias ward off the threat of civil war, outwit his relatives, and deal with a charming rival in his wife’s own palace?

EXCERPT

Matthias pulled Danaë into his lap, squeezing her close. She felt his chest rumble in rueful laughter. “Only you could fall into the ocean, be rescued by pirates, and wind up haring off with them on a treasure hunt.”

“Oddly enough, Father said much the same thing,” she admitted. “But it turned into a wonderful adventure. I even got my favorite tiara out of it, the silver one with the large pearl.” She’d also earned the unswerving loyalty of Captain Jason Constantinedes and his crew, who now served as her personal spy network outside of Hellas. After brief consideration she decided not to mention the days she had spent as Jason’s willing lover. It was in the past, and she didn’t want Matthias harboring a grudge against Jason if the captain ever had cause to come to Hellaspont. “They brought me back home with a wealth of knowledge about piracy on the high seas. Which is why I know I don’t want to be a pirate queen.”

“Thank the gods for that,” Matthias muttered, kissing her hair. “You’re rapacious enough as it is.”

She turned so that she could nuzzle under his ear, licking the salty skin there. “I never heard you complain before.”

“I’m not complaining now, little bird, merely observing.”

She hummed, catching his earlobe between her teeth and nibbling on it. “Rapacious,” she whispered after she let it go. “I like the sound of that.” His breath caught as she traced spirals on his skin with the tip of her tongue. She could smell clean sweat, male musk, and something distinctly Matthias underneath it all. “Would you like me to show you how rapacious I can be?” she teased.

“Another night, perhaps,” She heard a promise in his voice. “Tonight, milady, I plan on doing the boarding.”

His arms tightened around her and he got up with a soft grunt, carrying her to the bed and dropping her onto the silk coverlet. She bounced with a giggle and rose up on her elbows, watching avidly as he pulled off his shirt and breeches. Regular riding and sparring matches with his guard had kept him muscled and firm, and she could spend hours running her fingers over the curves and dips of his body, particularly his broad, furred chest. The flickering light from candle and fireplace transformed the hair there into gold and amber sparks, trailing down his carved abdomen before spreading into a darker nest of curls around his rising cock. She rubbed her thighs together, feeling the delicious ache that always grew between them when he stripped like this for her.

He cupped himself, squeezing the shaft hard enough to make the sheathed head bulge. “Still want a statue of me?” he asked, with the cheerful arrogance of a man who knew he was desired.

She licked her lips. “More than ever.”

He glanced down at his swelling flesh and grinned. “You can’t scare me, you know. I’ve seen the kind of statuary you have in Hellas. I doubt anyone would bat an eyelash at it.”

“Bat an eyelash, no. Be violently jealous of me, yes.” It was her turn to tease, and she took her time unfastening the brooches that held up her gown. She slid the delicate fabric over one breast, then the other, letting it caress her hardening nipples. The sensation made her shiver. Cupping one breast, she rolled the peak between her fingers, imagining his hot, wet mouth around it. “The question is, what will your future subjects think when they see the statue of me?”

Matthias put a knee on the mattress. The movement made the furred sac between his legs swing a bit, and she reached out to cradle it, enjoying how he shivered at her touch. “The women will weep from envy, and the men will all fall in love with you,” he murmured, his voice rough and needy. “And none of them will ever have you.”

“No, they won’t,” she breathed, letting him push her onto her back. The ache between her hips grew, turning into a slow, sweet throb. “Only you, my love.

Excerpt
Handing her the drink, I sat down next to her and threw back the vodka in one go. She did the same and put her drink on the wooden coffee table. Leaning back, she exhaled slowly.
“That’s better.”
I should have gotten up then. But I didn’t want to. I wanted to make sure she was all right. I wanted to sit here next to her, feel the heat from her thigh so close to mine. If I moved just an inch, I’d be touching her. I wanted to undo her braids and see how that light hair fell around her breasts. I wanted her to say my name again, like she had before.
I pictured her all breathless and panting. But this time it wouldn’t be from fear. It would be from heat. My fingers twitched with the urge to plunge them into that hair and make her beg for my mouth.
I startled as I felt her sit up and lean close to me as she ran her fingers through my hair.
“I thought it would be longer.”
I’d taken my hair out of the bun when I got home. And thank fuck I had because now she was touching me. The woman was touching me and I couldn’t take it. Turning to face her, I wrapped a hand around the back of her neck to hold her in place and pressed my mouth against hers.
The softness of her lips with a hint of strawberries that didn’t seem like strawberries at all and more like sex and something else hit me. The desire to find out what else she tasted like elsewhere fueled my lust and channeled straight to my cock. Without giving her a chance to even respond, I licked her lips and delved in as she opened her mouth, just a small gap, but enough for me to slip my tongue into. And we groaned in unison.
Leaning against her more, I lowered her to the couch. Propped on one elbow, I grabbed her breast with my free hand. Warm and heavy against my palm, the hint of soft flesh I could suck and nibble spurred me on. Her nipple hardened and she let out a gasp when I released her mouth.
But only for a second.
I couldn’t stop.
The taste of her, the wet heat of her tongue against mine, drove me crazy. As cliché as it felt to admit, even to myself, Katy was provoking a need in a me I’d never felt with any other woman.
I was never going to stop.
One of her hands remained grabbing my hair. She rested the other on my shoulder. I shifted our bodies and pushed between her thighs, grinding against her core. Her body. Her heat. Soft noises escaped her mouth as I touched her.
It all felt so damn good.
I moved my mouth to the side of her neck, inhaling the scent of her skin, the vanilla shampoo she used tickling my nose. I was about to move lower when she whispered my name.
“Sam.”
It was barely a whisper, a breath, a hint of my name. But it was there. And I couldn’t ignore it.
I sat up and looked at what I’d done to her.
Jesus, I’d mauled her.
Her mouth was swollen and red from my rough kiss, her shirt disheveled where I’d manhandled her tit. Her thighs were spread, evidence of the dry-humping I’d fully intended to turn legitimate had she not said my name. I wanted her to look like a woman who needed me, full of a burning lust she needed me to fuck out of her.
Instead, she looked traumatized.
“Lock your door when I leave.” I stood and turned and stomped out, slamming the door behind me.

Excerpt:

As Matthew and Isaac Adams opened the front door to their house, the telephone started ringing. Matthew sighed. “Typical. No rest for the wicked. I’ll answer it, you go and get ready for work.”

Isaac nodded and headed off to do as his brother advised. Matthew, the older of the two, walked toward the ringing phone and snatched it off the hook. Then, remembering that the person on the other end of the line would have no idea what a rough night he’d just had, he made the effort to inject some politeness into his tone.

“Hello? Adams residence.” Isaac had told him time and time again that the last part about the residence was old-fashioned, that people didn’t say that anymore, but Matthew couldn’t seem to shake it.

“Hello, Matthew? It’s Richard.” The village vicar’s voice, even though he’d only spoken four words, sounded strained, almost panicked. “You boys just get back?”

“Yeah, a moment ago. Why, what’s up?”

“I, uh… I got a call. A dead sheep has been found up on the moor. Not just dead. Mutilated. Like a wild animal attack.”

An unpleasant feeling wormed its way under Matthew’s skin and his stomach flipped. “Oh?” He paused, then figured he had nothing to gain by not saying the next words he wanted to. “You don’t think it was us?”

The vicar’s gasp was instant, one of genuine surprise. “Lord, no! Absolutely not. I just phoned to let you know and I was wondering if you’d come up there with me and take a look? You and Isaac are probably more qualified than anyone else in the village to tell what did this.”

“Isaac has to work, he just went to get ready. But yes, I’ll come up. I’ll let my brother know where I’m going, then I’ll be straight over. Are you at the rectory?”

“Yes. Okay, I’ll see you soon. Thanks, Matthew. Bye.”

“Goodbye.”

Matthew hung up the phone with another sigh. The horrible feeling that had crept under his skin and taken over his gut seemed as if it was there to stay, and it was never a good sign. The vicar’s news was surprising, yes, but he also had an inkling that it was going to spell trouble, or at the very least, inconvenience for him and his brother.

Pulling in a deep breath in an attempt to calm his jangling nerves, Matthew walked upstairs and toward his brother’s bedroom. The door was closed. He knocked. “You decent?”

“Yeah,” Isaac replied, “close enough.”

Stepping into the room, Matthew looked at his brother. He was half-dressed, ready for his shift at the doctor’s surgery, where he was a general practitioner. “Sorry to interrupt, mate, but that was Richard on the phone. They’ve found a mutilated sheep up on the moor, and he’s asked me to go with him to check it out.”

Isaac paused with one arm pushed into his shirtsleeve. “He doesn’t think—”

Matthew cut him off. “No. He was quite adamant about that. He just thought we’d be able to help figure out what did it. I explained that you’ve got to go to work, though. I’m going to head across there now and go up with him.”

“I could phone in, let them know I’ll be late.”

Matthew held up his hand. “There’s no need, brother. Relax. Just go to work and help the sick people. I’ll let you know what—if anything—I find out.”

Opening his mouth, then closing it again, Isaac seemed to have thought better of whatever he was going to say. He continued to dress. “All right, I will. But make sure you let me know what happens. Send me a text or something, and I’ll phone you as soon as I have a gap in between patients.”

Matthew grimaced. He hated texting. Hated mobile phones, actually. Technology was one of the things he disliked most about modern-day life, though he realized it was a necessary evil. It solved as many problems for him and his brother as it created, so he dealt with it as best he could. Fortunately, Isaac had always had an affinity with computers and phones, so he tutored Matthew.

“Yeah, all right. I’d better go and find my phone first then, eh?”

Smirking at his brother’s rolled eyes, he left the room and headed for his own bedroom, where he thought he’d left the device the previous night before he and Isaac had headed for the caves. Immediately spotting the mobile phone—which Isaac often made a point of telling him was akin to a brick—he grabbed it, stuffed it into his pocket, and made his way downstairs.

Retrieving his keys from the hook by the front door, he called up to his brother. “I’m going now, Isaac. I’ll see you after my shift at the pub. I’m working until closing time.”

“Okay. Don’t forget to keep me posted!”

“I won’t.” As if he could forget. The dead sheep was going to be a big thing, he just knew it. The vicar might not think he and his brother had anything to do with it, but some of the other villagers might. When there was no proof either way, just his and Isaac’s word, it was understandable, really. Since he and his brother changed into wolves every full moon, it was a natural conclusion to draw. Particularly since normal wolves had been extinct in England for over five hundred years.
