Spotlight: Sons of Thunder by Libby Bishop #UrbanFantasy #Romance #OneClick @LibbyBRomance

Son_of_Thunder-500

Title: Son of Thunder
Author: Libby Bishop
Publisher: Entangled Publishing

~Blurb~

Her hunt for a murderer is his way home.

Rune is the grandson of Thor, and just as strong. Exiled to the realm of Earth for nearly killing his brother–it was a little misunderstanding– he has to find a way to redeem himself so he can get back to Asgard. And when he lands—literally—in the bed of a fiery redhead with an FBI badge, he realizes that she may be the key to going home. But helping Liv hunt a killer has one big consequence—chemistry. He can’t keep his hands off her, and there’s no way they can ever be together.

Six years ago, FBI Special Agent Liv Winter’s best friend was murdered. Since then, she’s taken a two-week vacation around the anniversary of the death to try and solve the case. She’s used every available resource. Yet, her friend’s killer is still on the loose. She refuses to give up—willing to do almost anything to bring the person to justice.

Apparently, almost anything includes trusting a god. And while she might need Rune’s help with her case, there’s no way she’ll ever trust him with her heart.

 Rune

 ~Excerpt~

She walked into the room just as he set the last bowl on the table. He pulled a chair out for her and waved a hand over the food—roasted chicken, potatoes, and carrots, as well as a large salad. “This was all I had to work with.” He folded his arms, smirking a bit. “You’ve never had it like I’ve made it.”

She raised an eyebrow as she took a seat, seemingly unmoved. “I’ve had this meal a thousand times,” she said, putting the napkin on her lap. “It certainly smells delicious, but what makes you think it’ll be different this time?”

He winked, taking his seat. “Try it, then tell me what’s different.”

His words were meant as a challenge, and she smiled as she picked up her knife and fork. “All right, Rune. Let’s see what you’ve got.”

He waited patiently as she started with a carrot, then a potato. All she gave him was a “Hmm,” then she cut a piece of chicken. He was hoping for more of a reaction, and frowned as she ate the chicken without so much as a glimmer of what she was thinking, or how good he damn well knew the food was.

She appeared to be completely unimpressed.

He growled, angry at her non-reaction. How dare she insult his cooking in such a way? He prided himself on his ability to make women practically fall on their knees in front of him just from one bite of food. He shoved the chair back and stood, pointing a finger at her, but stopped when she giggled.

“Sweet Odin, Viking—you are touchy.”

“I dare you to defy how good that is. Dare you.”

“Oooh, a tantrum from a god.” She rolled her eyes. She picked up two carrots with her fork and lifted them to her mouth, but paused before eating them. “How original.”

That did it. “Woman, don’t test me—I’m a god, and you’ll lose.”

Writing with pen and paper she brings things to life, and hell hath no fury like an antagonist scorned. Now she’s on the run from Kyrin, an evil demon warlord who surfaced from one of her first manuscripts. And the only way to get rid of him is to destroy the manuscript.

Enter JG1988, her long-time online friend. He knows nothing of the curse nor the magick Emma possesses. His only wish is to finally meet her in person and take their relationship to the next level. He reveals a surprise of his own when he shows up at Emma’s door as international recording artist Jake Griffin.

Excerpt

Jake lead her into the adjoining room where a baby grand piano sat in the corner.

Turning the piano bench sideways, he sat back and motioned for her to sit in front of him. His arms slid alongside her shoulders as he reached out for the ivory bars, and he tightened his legs against her outer thighs. The heat radiating off him surrounded Emma like a blanket of safety. She snuggled up against his chest as his fingers tickled the keys.

Succumbing to the enchanting melody, her eyes fell closed. His chest pressed against her back, rising and falling as he sang out the verses he wrote just for her, simply titled, Emma’s Song. The words took her breath away how he spoke so lovingly of her through song. Each refrain more passion filled than the one before, pouring his heart out with each note. The emotions welling up inside confused her, as she let herself become entranced by his baritone voice. Fear and happiness pooled in her eyes, releasing in tears that slid over her cheeks.

They met for the first time tonight in person yet it felt like they had known each other all their lives. Their electronic relationship manifesting into something real and tangible excited her, but also scared her to death.

The keys stopped dancing, and the room held a silence marred only by the heaving of Jake’s breath. Reopening her eyes, Emma turned her head toward him. His fingertips pressed against her jaw line, guiding her head as he leaned in. Their lips met with a cautious tenderness. She swung her body around on the seat, raising her hands to encompass his neck. He pulled her closer, parting her lips as he swept his tongue over hers. An innate ache pulsed through her, taking over her self-control. His very touch tingled every nerve along the way.

She slipped her fingers through the back of his wavy hair, massaging his head in rhythm with their exploratory kisses. His breathing grew heavier, as he cradled her in his arms. A startling mixture of sharp chords rang out through the air as her back landed against the keys.

Soft laughter danced through their kiss as Jake picked her up by the hips off the bench and placed her on top of the baby grand. Her chest heaved in succession with the thumping of her heart. He stared at her with such intent she’d never seen. His intense eyes hypnotized her, holding her gaze.

I’ve pictured this a thousand times, but nothing compares to the actual taste of your lips,he whispered as he laid her back, brushing the chestnut locks of hair from her face. Lush lips caressed her neck, kissing the delicate skin down the plunging neckline of her dress.

Words made no sense. They circulated in her head, jumbled by the emotions coursing through her. Her body ached for him to take her completely as his hands caressed the length of her body, exploring every inch of her, memorizing every curve.

She dreamed about this moment. He wanted her as much as she wanted him. Her head screamed no, she’d only hurt him. But her heart shouted louder as she let her fingers ride up the length of his forearms, pressing against the hard muscle.

As breathtaking as you look sprawled across my piano, I have a better idea,” he whispered.

Pulling her to him, he slid her off the piano. She wrapped her arms and legs around him as he carried her to the sofa, laying her beneath him.Carefully, he slid the silken dress above her hips, exposing her stomach where he decorated her skin with the warmth of his tongue and lips. A shiver climbed her spine releasing itself in a vocal aching of want and need.

Finn’s a failure—at necromancy and life in general. “It’s not my fault,” he’d insist, looking deep into your eyes as he lifts your wallet. You’d catch him, of course. Because he’s a failure.

Veruca, on the other hand, is competence personified. She has to be, working as a Reaper directly under the Prince of Hell. When Finn shows up in a stolen sport coat and uses Veruca as cover from his murderous mistress’ glowering goons, she finds the one thing she may not be so good at: resisting Finn’s handsome face.

RATTLE hits all the best marks, delivering sex, laughs, romance, and action. Read it to follow along with Veruca and Finn as they fall in love, discover each other’s bodies, and try to save Finn from himself.

Excerpt:
Figuring he probably wasn’t getting lucky, Finn put his shirt back on before settling in at the table. Veruca was so proper, setting one of the cloth napkins she hadn’t bloodied across her lap and keeping her elbows off the table as she pulled the lid off her plate and set it aside. Without bothering with a napkin, Finn followed her lead, uncovering a massive plate of creamy pasta that pulled a growl from his belly and a low moan between his lips. Veruca laughed, gestured to the utensils wrapped and set on the table.

“Eat up.”

Finn crammed three mouthfuls in before chewing, swallowed half the food whole, and only forced himself to calm down and eat politely when he caught Veruca smiling at him as she delicately twirled angel hair around her fork. He coughed to himself, slowing his overworked jaw, and did his best to match her slow pace. His belly protested—loudly, which made Veruca giggle—but he ignored it, and forced himself to sit up and pay attention to his host.

“Why’d you help me back there?” Finn asked when his mouth was clear and Veruca had reached over to pour him some water.

“You were in trouble and I find you interesting.”

“How’d you know I wasn’t on the run from the law?”

“That man was no cop,” Veruca said, before shaking her head. “And even if you are, I’m not worried. I can take care of myself.”

“You’re confident,” Finn said.

“I’m not the one bleeding,” she pointed out, catching his eye.

“Point,” he agreed with a nod. He took a few more bites, mulling over what she’d said, how the evening had progressed. It was well after midnight, he was safe in the immaculate hotel room of a near stranger who had stabbed him in the ass with a steak knife, and he’d lost all his extra clothes to a goon in the sea.

It certainly wasn’t how he thought his day would end when he’d woken up fourteen hours before, but he was never one to shun adventure.

Playlist from Blood Witch by Naomi Clark #FF #UF #Suspense @Naomi_Jay @EvernightPub

I don’t often listen to music when I’m writing – mostly because I do a lot of my writing in my work place, and apparently a hospital food court is not the ideal location for blasting music in. But one thing I always do for my characters and books is set up a playlist on Spotify for songs that remind me of them. I listen to those lists on my commute to work, and it gets me in the right frame of mind for writing. A particular lyric will trigger something – a scene, an emotion, a bit of dialogue – that I just know will be perfect for a story. It’s become an almost ritualistic part of my writing process.

I’m actually still working on the playlist for Lola and BLOOD WITCH, but there are a few songs I’ve already picked out as being crucial for the mood of Lola’s world. Want to check them out?

Laura Marling – Devil’s Resting Place – I love Laura Marling, but this song struck a particular chord, more for the mood it evokes than the song itself. It’s dark and mysterious and hints at danger.

The Misfits – Great Balls of Fire – The Misfits are one of my all-time favourite bands and this is one of my all-time favourite covers. I think it pretty neatly encapsulates the impact Tristesse has on Lola!

Holly Golightly – Devil Do – It’s not a spoiler to say that devils and demons play a part in BLOOD WITCH. For that reason alone, this song has earned a place on the playlist.

AFI – Miss Murder – Look, if I ever leave AFI off a playlist, just assume I’ve been kidnapped by aliens and replaced by a pod person. I love AFI, and I never write a story without at least one of their songs in my mind. Miss Murder is the unofficial theme song for BLOOD WITCH.

Blurb
Lola Guntram is used to being an outcast. She’s the only blood witch in Fort Rosser, BloodWitch-evernightpulishing-jayaheer2015-finalimagemistrusted by other witches and happier working solo. But when her dark practices make her the prime suspect in a brutal murder investigation, she’s forced to turn to others for help. Not that she has many allies – her ex-girlfriend thinks Lola is the killer, and the local coven leader thinks Lola will corrupt them all if she gets too close.

Help comes in an expected – and alluring – form. Tristesse is a demon on the run, beautiful, enigmatic, and suspiciously keen to assist Lola while she chases down the real killer. How can Lola refuse? With the police breathing down her neck, accusations flying, and inhuman monsters on the streets, Lola needs all the help she can get. The killer is angry, desperate, and determined. But so is Lola Guntram. And she doesn’t care how dark or bloody the magic has to get – she’s going to stop them.

Excerpt:

Once home, she returned to her books. Now she had a definite symbol to look for, she was able to narrow down the search of her considerable library. In a battered tome called Symbols, Sigils, Signs and Seals, she finally found it. She barely remembered buying the book; most likely she’d picked it up secondhand somewhere, mentally added it to her “to-read” pile and forgotten about it. She’d always bought far more books than she’d ever get round to reading.
Still, there it was in plain black ink on the yellowed page. The same sigil she’d seen on Isako’s floor. It wasn’t alchemical, as she’d first thought, although it shared the typical sparse lines and deceptive simplicity. The language of alchemy was really just a form of shorthand, indicating herbs, liquids, and equipment. This sigil, according to the text, could be broken down into several smaller ones, but combined together like this, it meant just one thing. A word. A name.
Gehenna.
Hell.
Lola rubbed her scars, tracing the lines of countless spells cast, immeasurable energy drained and used. She’d cast spells for self-confidence, spells of attraction. Spells for good luck, spells for decision-making. Once she’d spent almost twenty-four hours casting a spell that wove together blood and fire magic to help a client take revenge on her rapist. That was dark magic, made of dark intent no matter how worthy the cause. That was the only time she’d broken the “harm none” rule, and she didn’t regret it. That was the kind of magic the Choir thought was just the tip of the iceberg with Lola. It was the hardest spell she’d ever worked, the grayest, and absolutely the most satisfying.
It was nothing compared to this sigil and what it meant.
Gehenna. There was only one reason, the book stated, that you would write this symbol as part of a spell, and that was to open a doorway. Write it in freshly-spilled blood and you weren’t just opening it, you were kicking it down. With someone else’s freshly-spilled blood…
Lola set the book down, stomach churning. She had to tell Yvette.
But what could Yvette do? This was way outside the Choir’s comfort zone. Fuck that, it was outside Lola’s comfort zone. This was bigger than elemental magic, bigger than blood magic, and bigger than motive Lola could have guessed at.
This was demonology.
Murder was just the beginning.

About the Author
Naomi likes writing, perfume, fancy tea, and unfathomable monsters from the dark spaces between the stars, not necessarily in that order. She has been writing stories ever since she learned how to write, but is still trying to master the art of biography writing. When she’s not dealing with werewolves, demons, or sea monsters, she’s hanging out with her cat and probably watching a documentary about Bigfoot. If the cat isn’t available, she’s with her fiancé watching cookery shows and silently plotting her next book.
