Excerpt, Kacey Hammell, © 2016

“Detective James, what can I do for you?” Captain Coleman Douglass leaned back in his chair and looked the detective in the eye. Deep down, Cole suspected what Ethan James was about to tell him. He didn’t relish the fact his suspicions would be confirmed, but he’d known for weeks that this night was inevitable.
He only thanked God there were no fatalities.
“Sir, I need to talk to you about Detective Knowles. It’s urgent.” “Sit down, Detective. Let me get you a cup of coffee and—”
“Thank you sir, but no,” Ethan interrupted. “I didn’t come for coffee.”
Okay, obviously this isn’t a social call. He watched Ethan draw in a deep breath, and scan the room, as if unable to meet Cole’s eyes.
“Well, all right then. Say what you have to say. What about Detective Knowles?”
Just saying her name was like pouring syrup over flapjacks. Alicia Knowles was the sugar in his coffee, the up to his down, the left to his right.
They’d first met two years ago. Both had been on vacation in Miami. Sun, sand, and surf—it had all changed his life forever. Cole had never thought his first vacation in three years would lead to love.
On his last night in Miami, he’d sat by the sand at midnight, the light from his beach house behind him reflecting over the water. On one of the benches along the boardwalk, unwilling to believe he needed to return to work, he’d listened to the breeze, the sounds and movements of the waves crashing against one another.
He wasn’t sure how long he’d sat there, lost in his own thoughts, when he felt the bench beside him shift. He’d looked over to his left and had never glanced away again.
Not the time, Cole. Not the time. Think about her later.
“I think she came back too soon.” Ethan cleared his throat. “To the job, I mean.”
To suspect it and then hear the words spoken aloud didn’t settle within Cole. He’d seen it for weeks, in the shadows beneath her eyes, watched the far-off look that settled over her face more times than he liked. He thought she might be reliving the past and the ordeal she’d gone through. Dammit, he wanted to take Parker Feeney apart with his bare hands. Too bad the bastard was already dead.
Cole’s heart had ached at the pain, sadness, and even fear on Alicia’s face too many times to count. What he wouldn’t give to be able to erase the memories from her mind.
“Christ, Ethan, sit the fuck down. I’m getting a crick in my neck.” He got up from behind his desk, and moved to the small table in the corner where the coffeemaker sat.
He filled two mugs with steaming brew, added two sugars and milk to his, then turned to Ethan. Thankful the guy had taken a seat, Cole felt sorry for him. He waited with elbows parked on his knees, head between his hands, and forlorn, as if he’d lost his best friend. “You take your coffee straight or…?”
“Straight,” Ethan mumbled.
Cole carried both mugs back to his desk, placing one in front of Ethan. He sat with mug in hand and took a satisfying drink. Time to get things out in the open. “Why do you feel Detective Knowles returned to duty too soon? What happened tonight?”
Ethan sat up, dragged both hands through his hair, and leaned his head back to stare at the ceiling. “Sir, have you ever done something that would change your life forever? Even though it would be for someone’s own good and well-being, you still hesitated because in mere hours, they could end up despising you?”
Ethan lowered his chin and stared at Cole through confused and worried eyes.
Cole’s heart went out to the guy, but he suspected Alicia had to be taken off the street. He just needed confirmation of the fact.
“Yeah, I have, but I got over it. You have to do what is best for yourself and your partner, not to mention your fellow officers who could be called out to a scene with you two. And let’s not forget the citizens on the street. There is more than just one person’s life on the line if your partner can’t handle the job and something goes awry. You can’t let it get personal. Sounds cold, but it’s a harsh world in which we live. I don’t have to tell you that.” Cole set his mug on his desk, sat back in the chair, and crossed both arms over his chest. “Tell me what happened, Ethan.”
“Sir—” Ethan began.
“Call me Cole. You should know by now I don’t stand on ceremony.” Even though he had only been with Precinct Fifteen for about sixteen weeks, he had been welcomed well by all but one detective in the division. The only one who hadn’t been as welcoming was the woman Ethan obviously needed to discuss.
After he’d replaced her father when he’d retired, Alicia’s glares and icy façade whenever he was present let Cole know she disapproved of his status. He was sure she hated him for taking her dad’s place.
Of all the critics he’d been forced to deal with since he took the new job, her opinion of him was the only one that cut him to the quick. Alicia used their work relationship as a wall between them. He couldn’t really blame her. It was one of the reasons he didn’t act upon his feelings for her, or try to rekindle the spark.
Not yet anyway.
Ethan must not know about Alicia’s discomfort with me. If he did, he might not be so quick to speak up.
She would no doubt be livid about Ethan’s recommendation to take her off the street. She’d be even more irate that Cole would sign the order.
“Yeah.” Ethan cleared his throat. “It’s been nearly six months since the night Detective Knowles was kidnapped. The first thing we saw when we got to the scene tonight was Monica Fuller gagged, her body on the ground. It was like seeing Ali, uh, Detective Knowles, as she was that night when we found her in a similar condition. Tonight, she went pale, seemed to stagger, almost as if she was confused and off balance. It shook her up so bad, she never once asked about the suspect. It was very much unlike her. Usually in a case like this, if she sees the suspect, she’s the first on foot after him.”
Ethan stared Cole in the eye. His expression was pained and a little bit sad. “She even tried to lift the body from the cement where Fuller had dragged the victim. That it was against procedure didn’t bother her.”
“If you were aware it was against protocol, why did you allow her to get that close to the victim, Detective James?” Cole had a pretty good idea why, but he needed the full version of Ethan’s story before he could make the decision that was already ninety-nine percent final in his mind.
“I did it because Ali seemed so agitated. I know she was reliving what happened to her, and part of me remembered, too. What if the night we found Ali had gone differently? What if we were too late?”
A shiver ran through Cole at Ethan’s words. Just the thought of things playing out any differently chilled him to the bone.
A second chance. It’s what you have here. Remember that, Douglass.
Ethan took a deep breath and reached forward to retrieve his coffee. He took a swig of the warm liquid then continued. “I know I may have been a bit biased and in the wrong myself, Captain, to be that close, contaminating the scene. I’ll take the reprimand for it. But as soon as I got her in the car, Ali calmed down considerably. I’d hoped it would get her head back into the game, but it didn’t.”
Cole leaned back in his chair, hesitant to ask, but he had to. “What happened after you got her away from the victim?”
Ethan looked toward the window to Cole’s left, seeing what, he didn’t know. But the sorrow on his face told the whole story. Cole knew he wouldn’t like the next words.
“After the M.E. got to the scene, he was surprised to find the body had been moved slightly. He was really lit up about it and….” Ethan took a gulp of his coffee and set it back on the desk, almost sloshing the dark liquid over the rim. “I tried to explain it all to him, but he wouldn’t listen. He got loud. Before I could stop her, Detective Knowles was out of the car, angry at him for what she called callousness. Then Alicia just decked him. I have never seen her lose it like this while on the job.”
It was worse than he’d thought. Sighing, Cole picked up the yellow memo pad to his left and held it out toward Ethan. “Write it down. All of it. I’m sure the M.E. will bring this to my attention before the day is out. I’m surprised I haven’t heard about it already.”
Ethan quickly averted his eyes, without taking the pad.
Cole suspected there was more to come. He dropped the pad back on his desk. “What else happened out there, Detective? I can’t have omissions on this. I need to handle it,” Cole said, putting the weight of authority in his voice. “I need to know all of it.”
“Detective Isabella Knowles arrived on the scene. She took it over and settled the M.E. down. It was over and done with. I doubt he’ll make a complaint. Hell, he was probably just pissed off at being dragged out of bed. Or maybe being decked by a woman. I don’t know. I shouldn’t have mentioned it.”
Cole threw his pen on the desk. “Don’t make excuses, James. You know damn well these incidents have to be reported. You and Detective Knowles should not have moved the victim at all, and Knowles shouldn’t be on the job if she can’t handle it.”
“But Cole—”
“No, I’ve heard enough.” Cole tossed the memo pad toward him. Ethan caught it, but just barely. “All of it. You came to me and you can be certain I’ll take care of this matter. A citation will also be put in your folder about disturbing the victim. The only reason you aren’t suspended right now is because your record is squeaky clean. Don’t make me change my mind.”
Cole reached for the phone on his right. He’d order Alicia to his office within the next thirty minutes or he’d go get her. Rage boiled within him. It was as if a beast wanted to claw its way through him, manic to be released. He’d known she shouldn’t be back on the job. To risk her pensions, suspension, everything important to her because of her anger…. He was furious she couldn’t manage it.
It just showed how out of control she was. She couldn’t keep herself in check. But his feelings for her had shaded the truth. He was as much at fault as she was.
“Cole… damn it. I know you have to talk to her about all of this, but what consequences will she face?”
Cole’s fingers tightened on the telephone receiver. His jaw clenched. He understood Ethan’s loyalty to Alicia. Dammit, he’d walk to hell and back for her, too. She’d touched him in more ways than one the night they’d first met. He wanted more of the pleasure and the swell of emotions that consumed him when he was with her. She had made him feel ten feet tall, strong, and powerful. She’d made him feel like a man—her man.
“You know exactly what consequences your partner will face. You realized it before you came in here. While I should suspend your ass, too, I need one of you on this case that has insight into Fuller. It might take anyone new too much time to catch up. But you’re on desk duty only. Stay put in your office unless I direct you otherwise. Now, take the pad, head somewhere private, and write down everything that happened this morning. Have it on my desk in an hour.” Cole punched the numbers on the phone, angrier than he had ever been in his life. “You’re dismissed, Detective James. I’ll handle things from here.”
As the phone rang at the other end of the line, Cole watched Ethan leave his office and prayed he could keep himself from killing Alicia Knowles with his bare hands. He was in a tough spot as her boss and as someone who cared about her. But he had to stop the downhill slide her life was on before she got herself killed.
He’d see to it that she was protected.
Even from herself.

Our Sexy Mystery ~ @MySexySaturday #Awakenings #MySexySaturday #MySexyAuthors #Saturday7 #MSS129

My Sexy Saturday Page Header #3

Hello everyone! Thank you for joining me for the 129th week of My Sexy Saturday.

Here are the details: every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words, sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.

This week’s theme — Our Sexy Mystery

Here, Alicia’s friend has been brutally assaulted and while she and Hannah are great friends, she doesn’t know a lot about Hannah’s family.

And she certainly doesn’t expect to find out that her new boss — and ex lover — is Hannah’s oldest brother. The brother that Alicia confessed to Hannah she was in love with …

(c) Kacey Hammell, 2016

“I told them about you.”

Alicia turned and came face-to-face with Cole. Ethan stood to the side of him, nervous, as if he wanted to be anywhere else, a feeling Alicia understood. Ethan’s here, too? Shit, she vaguely remembered one of the brothers mention him earlier. She was more confused than ever. “You told them about me? Why?”

As she stared into Cole’s eyes, the hair on her neck stood up and she turned back to Geoff. Brown eyes, the crow’s feet clearly visible at the corners, the dark hair….

She spun back around to Cole. Inspecting the same eyes, she put the pieces together. She KH_Awakenings_V1_400X600recalled the one night that haunted her dreams with passion and desire, and the small bits of conversation they’d had between bouts of the hottest sex she’d ever had.

“I have two brothers and a sister. As the oldest, there wasn’t a lot of time for me to just do whatever I wanted. Hannah, Nathan, and Geoff demanded a lot of my time after our parents died and I did everything I could to keep them safe and happy. I’ll never let any of them down.”

Alicia closed her eyes as the memories flooded back, surprised she hadn’t put it all together before now. For a year, she’d been friends with Hannah. Neither of them had delved too deep into one another’s lives, but they’d shared a few things. A small world it was, and she had to wonder if Hannah had ever told her brother about her. Especially the one night they’d both drunk a bit too much and shared more than a few secrets.

Fear spiked through her body as she remembered her confession to Hannah…how much Cole Douglass meant to her, even only after one night, and how much she loved his hands tracing her body.

She could only pray Cole’s little sister hadn’t told her big brother everything.

#MidWeekTease ~ “…evil, it never stops.” #Awakenings #MWTease #Suspense

MWTease15

Happy Wednesday Friends! I hope everyone is doing great!

Special thanks to Angelica Dawson for rallying authors together to share teases every week.

~~~~~~~
This week’s tease is from my upcoming suspense title, AWAKENINGS.
Here, Detectives, Alicia has already been suspended from the force for her actions (in last week’s MWTease) and she now has her cousin to deal with, when they receive terrible news.
(C) Kacey Hammell,2016
Alicia opened her mouth to tell her to mind her own business when her cousin’s cell phone rang. Saved by the bell. Glad for the reprieve even though adrenaline boiled in her veins as if in a fight, she turned away and grabbed her empty gun holster off the couch. She put it away on the top shelf of the armoire near her front door.
“Alicia, you know you’re not to blame for what happened to Monica. It wasn’t your fault.”
Alicia should have known Brady would tap into everything she might feel and think. There was no way to hide from him. A seer, he sometimes had a sense of what others were going through—horrific or joyful. But without him, she wouldn’t be alive right now. She owed him her life and someday she hoped she’d be able to repay him.
Her hand on his arm, Alicia smiled into his clear-blue eyes. “I know. I do, but it’s really mind over matter isn’t it?” She lowered her hand and gave him a weak smile, then turned her back on KH_Awakenings_V1_400X600him. “This too shall pass…someday.”
“Ali….” Whatever Brady was about to say, Isabella’s curse rent through the apartment, interrupting him.
“Fucking Christ! Some days are just fucked. God dammit!”
With a flurry of movement, Isabella grabbed her coat from where she’d thrown it on the sofa and jammed her arms into the sleeves.
Alicia breathed a sigh of relief, glad Brady couldn’t lecture her on all the reasons she shouldn’t blame herself.
“Izzy, what is it?” Brady walked to her and clasped her shoulders with both hands. Instantly, Isabella’s movements slowed to a crawl and she heaved a deep sigh.
Alicia’s heart clenched at the display before her. Brady was the best thing to ever happen to Isabella. He was the calm in her soul, the root beneath her that kept her holding on. Alicia was envious of the connection the two had.
Once upon a time, she’d fantasized of her own knight in shining armor coming into her life. Now, she figured love and happily-ever-after were not all they were cracked up to be. She couldn’t keep herself safe. How the hell would she ever keep a husband or children safe in the world she lived in?
“Alicia?”
Pulled from her own thoughts by the sound of Isabella’s voice, she lifted her gaze to her cousin’s face. From the sadness and anger within her gaze, the call she’d received couldn’t be good.
“What is it?”
“Connor was on the phone. I have to get over to the Hopeful. Hannah’s been hurt.”
Alicia’s breath hitched at the thought of her friend, Hannah Isaacs, being injured. The Hopeful Shelter took in the homeless, helped battered and abused women seek another place to live, to escape an abusive husband or significant other.
Hannah helped so many women in their town, and even in surrounding areas, she deserved a medal for her goodness and her constant caring of others. She was a godsend to many children, abused women, the homeless.
“What’s happened?”
“I shouldn’t even be telling you this….”
“Save it, Isabella.” Alicia moved closer to her cousin. “You can’t give me vague answers and then just quit! We’re friends. What’s happened to her?”
With a hard sigh, Isabella met her gaze. “She was found this morning by one of the shelter’s volunteers. I don’t have all the details yet, but she’s on her way to Memorial Hospital. She was beaten and possibly raped.”
Alicia grabbed the back of the couch.
Dear God—evil, it never stops.
And here, is the chemistry between Alicia & Cole from Awakenings. They had a one night stand years ago, and now work together — he’s her boss! — which makes for some interesting moments in the story.
(c) Kacey Hammell, 2016
Alicia tilted her head back, giving Cole better access, which he took advantage of immediately. He nibbled his way up from her neck to the sensitive spot behind her ear and she nearly came undone.
She shivered in pleasure. He remembered the one spot that made her weak in the knees. It was as if she were drowning in the sensations rioting inside her. KH_Awakenings_V1_400X600
His hands caressed her waist, his teeth scraped her collar, and her nipples pebbled to sharp points beneath her bra and T-shirt. He cupped her breasts in his hands, tested the weight of them. Alicia couldn’t squelch her moan.
Hand at the back of his head, she rubbed his hair as she absorbed the feel of him under her palm. He pulled back, gaze wandering over her face—perhaps scanning for some telltale sign she would back out and walk away. She met his eyes boldly for a moment.
She had other plans. Ones that didn’t include the ability to walk anytime soon.
She slid her palms beneath the hem of his shirt. Her short, trimmed nails clawed his stomach. She remembered many things from their night together. His sheer enjoyment of having his stomach and chest scratched being one of them.
Cole claimed her mouth once again. He tasted of beer, yet sweet too. Their tongues battled, in and out with flicks and nibbles.
Her pussy clenched with need, desperate to have his lips between her thighs, on her nipples, and anywhere else he wanted to put his mouth. She broke their kiss, drew in a deep breath, and laid her head on his chest.
Beneath her ear, his heart raced as she caressed his stomach, a telling sign he was just as aroused and excited as she was.
He shoved his hands into her hair and massaged her scalp for a few seconds, then applied pressure for her to lift her gaze.
Alicia didn’t want to put a name to the fierceness in Cole’s eyes. She didn’t even want to speak for fear of ruining the moment. Her fingers clenched the hem of his shirt. She pushed it up and over his head as he raised his arms.
Cole’s well-muscled physique was a sight to behold. She wished to just stand there for days and stare. But his body was meant to be stroked and cherished. Before the night was over, she planned to do just that.
“Hang on, baby.” Bending, he lifted her in his arms. Sure he would carry her to his bedroom, she was surprised when he placed her on the counter beside the refrigerator.
MWTease15
Happy Wednesday Friends! I hope everyone is doing great!
Special thanks to Angelica Dawson for rallying authors together to share teases every week.
~~~~~~~

This week’s tease is from my upcoming suspense title, AWAKENINGS.

Here, Detectives, Alicia Knowles & her partner Ethan James have come upon the dead body of a young woman brutally murdered. After what Alicia went through in ILLUSIONS (book 1 of In the Arms of the Law), let’s just say, she is not dealing with it well.

And Alicia’s actions have repercussions that surprise her, and add tension to an already difficult situation Captain Cole Douglass, her boss — and her old lover…

(C) Kacey Hammell,2016

“Dammit it, Ethan, get over here. Help me cover her!”

At the high-pitched, crazed tone in his partner’s voice, Ethan had a feeling Alicia Knowles was remembering the past. He strode quickly to her side.

“You know we can’t cover her, move her, or do anything to contaminate the body or KH_Awakenings_V1_400X600scene.” He clipped the radio to his belt and knelt beside Alicia at Monica’s right side. His gaze lifted to his partner’s face. He saw what he’d feared: pale complexion, tight-set lips as concern and fear waged war on her face.

“Pull yourself together.”

Not quite six months had passed since Alicia had been held hostage, naked, gagged, and bound to a chair by a madman with a knife and a bomb. Earlier, when they’d received the call to investigate the sighting of the suspect they’d been on the lookout for, Ethan noted Alicia’s immediate stillness. There had been a misstep in her stride as they came upon the body—clothes torn, beaten, and still bound and gagged—lying in the parking lot behind her apartment building.

“I don’t want anyone to see her like this.” Alicia’s shaky voice washed over him.

The iciness of it chilled him to the bone.

She came back to the job too soon. I should have tried to stop her.

“She’s cold.” Alicia tenderly touched the dead woman’s cheek. “Help me get her off this cold cement. Let’s put her in the back seat of the car.”

To witness his partner wanting to comfort the young woman, a mere four years younger than she, nearly broke his heart.

But common sense prevailed. “Fuck, don’t touch her.” He grabbed her hand. “Dammit, Ali. Just wait for the M.E.” Ethan saw her body tighten with tension, and her gaze blazed fire at him as she lifted her head. She pinned him with a stare he’d come to recognize over the last few months. Rage, ice, and anger in those hardened eyes.

If looks could kill….

Hello everyone! Thank you for joining me for the 127th week of My Sexy Saturday.

Here are the details: every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words, sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.

This week’s theme — A Sexy Encounter

Today is from an upcoming release, Awakenings. Cole is Alicia’s new boss, and an old lover. They are forced together on the job and Alicia wants nothing more than to forget about their night together years ago. But no matter how much she wants to forget, it’s impossible…

(c) Kacey Hammell, 2016

He raised his hand to her cheek and pushed back a strand of hair that had fallen over her face. Her breath quickened at the light touch. Her body stilled. The air crackled with electricity. She was sure he could feel it, too; the tension rolled off his body like waves in KH_Awakenings_V1_400X600the ocean. To walk away would be the best thing to do, but for the life of her, Alicia couldn’t get her feet to move.

“You know what, Ali?” His voice was soft and powerfully seductive. “You know what I remember most about our night together?”

Alicia clasped his wrist, below where his fingers rested lightly on her cheek. She wanted to fall into his arms, burn beneath his touch again. They’d never talked about it, and she was curious to know what he remembered.

She remembered it all. Every touch and sigh. She basked in the memory of every kiss and every pleasure.

Through many a cold and lonely night, she cherished the memories of Cole’s hard body pressed against hers, pushing her against the mattress—and the wall and the bathroom counter. She marveled at how he’d made her feel like more of a woman in one night than she’d felt in all her adult years.

Her voice hoarse and scratchy, she whispered, “What do you remember?”

“Our fire.”
