“Sounds as though you’re enjoying yourself.”

Leanne jumped at the voice behind her and turned.

Pleased with the distraction, she welcomed Jay’s interruption to her thoughts. He always filled her heart with warmth. From the time she’d met him as a young teenager to the promising adult he’d become, he’d held a special place in her heart.

“Jay! I’m glad you’re still here. Beau told me you were staying on a few more days. Good for you. You deserve time off.”

“Hi, Leanne. Thanks. It’s great to see you. Did you enjoy today?”

“I did. It was a gorgeous ceremony. I may just see if I can have breakfast in that garden tomorrow. It’s so stunning out there.”

“A great idea. Can I join you?”

The hopeful expression on his face was so cute and did her in. She was unable to refuse him. She’d always loved having him around the house with Beau, and she liked the idea of catching up with him. They hadn’t seen one another in the last six months. At least not as far as he knew.

Don’t think about that now.

She cleared her throat, nervous. “Yes, you can.” Pushing away the unwanted thoughts, she smiled. Still wired from the day’s excitement, she had energy to burn and didn’t want the evening to end. Spending it with a good friend sounded great.

“Better yet, join me for a drink in the bar? They might still serve food, too. I’m getting hungry.”

Jay held out his arm for her to take his elbow and chuckled. “You never miss an opportunity to eat, do you?”

She laughed and gave his shoulder a light slap. “Don’t tease. I have always had a healthy appetite. At least what I eat doesn’t stay attached to my hips. I may not have my twenty-year-old figure anymore, but working out three times a week helps.”

“You look gorgeous. And sexier than ever.”

Leanne glanced over at him, the husky baritone in his voice surprising her. She’d never heard him sound so masculine.

Goosebumps coated her arms. The hungry look in his brown eyes had her sucking in a deep breath. With the images she’d seen of him, on book covers, magazines, and billboards in town, she saw him in a whole new way.

A sexy, adult male way that she shouldn’t entertain.

Not at her age.

Damn. When did he get so sexy?

Shame on you, woman. You’re old enough to be his mother.

Her inner voice spoke the truth. Her mind drifted to the photo she’d seen of him the other day—clad only in Calvin Klein underwear.

She remembered the way her untouched-for-months body had reacted. Nipples tightening, breathless and chest heaving, tingles of excitement erupted between her thighs. She’d jumped from her bed that night as though it had caught fire and spent the next few hours cleaning her house from room to room to occupy her mind and erase her embarrassment. She had done whatever it took to keep from eyeing Jay in a lustful way.

And now, here she was again, her thoughts drifting in ways that a woman her age shouldn’t entertain. She was such a fool. As if a man twenty years her junior could see her as sexy or desirable.

Cripes, she wasn’t even able to keep her husband—her same age—interested in her. He’d dumped her sorry ass for a blonde bimbo in her early twenties. There’d be no fathomable way she could hold on to a man like Jay.

“You shouldn’t doubt how stunning you are, Leanne.”

Excerpt

“Chloe, I’m Nick Grafton. I handle branding for Anterdec properties. It’s critically important for a new brand like O to carry the same recognizable image throughout all locations. Can you tell us a bit more about how your design will do this while at the same time bringing in the unique atmosphere of New Orleans?”

Even seated, I can tell he’s a tall man. All the time I spend with seven-foot-tall Henry has skewed my perspective a bit, but Nick must be over six feet. His hair is thick and a little on the long side for a corporate guy, light brown with a hint of silver. I admit it: I have a total weakness for long hair. Not man buns, but a little over the collar… something to grab and maybe pull at intimate times…

Ice blue eyes.

But what really gets my attention is his dark navy blue suit. Crisp shirt. Cotton madras plaid tie. When you spend every work day surrounded by mostly naked men, a fully-dressed guy gets your attention.

Sexy. Makes you wonder what’s underneath.

Not that I’m objectifying him. Ahem.

Did he say his last name is Grafton? My turn to look closely at him. My first boyfriend—we’re talking age fifteen here—was Charlie Grafton. Not an unusual last name, though, right?

His question is easy, really. I answer, he thanks me, no one else has a question.

I signal Carrie to lower the room lights. Showtime.

“O is never ordinary,” I begin. “We’ve created another O for you, and I think it’s our most exciting space yet.” The faces around the table are mildly surprised, not expecting anything else from me.

I click a button to lower the screen and another to start the slideshow.

“This is our first gO Spa.” I flash to a picture of a full-size RV. “This vehicle could be the beginning of a fleet. In every city where O has a presence, the gO Spa can go beyond the physical location. The gO Spa can be booked for private parties and weddings. It can travel to concert venues and theaters for services to big-name performers.”

The next slide is an interior view of the gO Spa. Three small showers. A bank of four hair washing and styling stations. Small closets filled with curated professional clothing.

“But it has another important purpose. The gO Spa is how O will give back to the communities that have welcomed us and made our success possible. A way to demonstrate our commitment to the idea that peace and pleasure are vital to everyone.”

Nick Grafton is giving me his full attention. I like it. I could get used to it.

She looked at her mother and frowned. She couldn’t have heard the woman correctly. Paisley wasn’t a militant; she wasn’t a protector. For the love of all the saints, she was a teacher for young children.

The marshal looked at Paisley with a frown, then sighed. “Because you are about the one and only person that I will trust to be around him right now, and since you know where the safe house is I will leave you to take him. It’s too dangerous right now for him to remain on his ship with Fintan.”

“Wait, you mean, The General?” There was awe in Paisley’s voice and she knew it but she had seen what the man had gone through for his mate. He was the only reason that Paisley believed in love once more. It was the reason why, with her mother’s help, she’d broken the arranged marriage and begun to live for herself and not for what she should do.

“He’ll be arriving soon with several guards. You are all going to the bunker. The guards will take the outer shelter, and you and Markus will take the inner sanctuary.”

The inner sanctuary was a place that none could enter if they weren’t of the Ralston family. It literally took living blood and a tie to the blood and heartbeat of a Ralston to keep the air actually on in that sanctuary. It would be either a haven or a tomb depending on if people knew it or not.

“And what about you, Mother? You’ve kept a low profile while they sorted out the issues that were evidently in your offices.”

“This is very true and it’s past time for me to get back to what it is that I do. Besides, this way I know that you will be safe as will Markus.”

“You could always go into the shelter with him instead of me,” Paisley pointed out.

“No, because they would use you to get to me. You are my one weakness, Paisley.”

Paisley moved and gave her mother a hug. “There are not many that know of me, Mother. You’d probably be safe, you know, and so would I.”

“No, there is too much to be done.”

“But—”

“No buts, Paisley. This is an order. You are to keep him safe.”

Paisley bowed her head and nodded. “As you say. Just remember I don’t know how to fight.”

“You don’t, but he does.” Her mother gave her another hug, then pushed her toward where the family bunker was. It was something that no one and nothing could get into. Even if the world exploded, the bunker would eject into space and hook up with a waiting ship that would become their own private spaceship. It had been designed with the ultimate of protections in mind. Her great-grandfather had designed it and it had kept her mother safe when this war began to truly heat up as it had in the last several months.

“I trust you,” Paisley told her mother. She took a deep breath and smiled. “I’ll go pack.”

“Your things are already in the bunker. I had my assistant go to your home and empty your closets and drawers, and I personally put everything into the bunker. It’s fully stocked with food for the two of you for as long as you might need to be in there as well as the machines to recreate foods if you wanted or needed it. I doubt that much time will be needed, but just in case.”

“A career military man,” Paisley mused. “And how does he feel about having to hide?” she asked with a knowing grin. She knew the type.

“About like what you think he’s feeling,” the marshal stated with a laugh. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Fin had to tranquilize him to bring him in. Now, go.”

And just like that Paisley was summarily assigned a duty that she had no business taking care of. She wasn’t a fighter and never had been. She was soft, short, and more than a little pudgy. Paisley was not anything that anyone really would ever look a second time at.

Chapter One

“No, not happening.”

His commanding officer gave him a look that would have made Markus squirm when he’d first stepped on board the cruiser. Now it only had him digging his heels in further. “You know that it is not even an option, Markus. For your safety, and for the future of both our races, we need to make sure you remain alive until the general public is made aware of everything.”

He hated when Fintan Daykin made complete sense. The man already thought too highly of his logic for his own good.

Yes, Markus was important, but to his thinking, he was no more important than any other Craegin. Or Imarian, if he wanted to get technical. He was, after all, a byproduct from both races, although the Imarian in his blood was definitely diluted.

Growling under his breath about his stubborn commander, Markus shoved a hand through his short, dark mahogany hair and paced around the office. Fintan held his tongue for once, a blessing and a curse all at the same time.

Markus wouldn’t be in this situation where he was being ordered by not only Fintan but by the marshal of the Craegin people to go into hiding for his safety if not for a wedding most Craegin and Imarian people did not know occurred.

If not for the fact the entire crew aboard the cruiser he was currently on would also be in danger, he wouldn’t even consider leaving. But he could not willingly and knowingly put others in danger because he was stubborn. Yes, he was stubborn, but he was not stupid. And while it grated severely on his nerves to admit it, Fintan and the marshal were correct. Not only were there factions on the Craegin home world who wanted him dead and buried where no one could dig him up, but there was the entire ruling body of Imara to take into account. They likely had spies in place on his home world and moon outposts, hoping to get a shot at him.

Markus stopped near the vid monitor in Fintan’s office, which showed the view from space of the outpost planet they were currently orbiting. Most folks down there didn’t have a clue about the ticking time bomb floating in space above their heads. The wars that were held in the ships in space sometimes pelted down upon the heads of those on the planets below, something they tried hard not to allow happen. Never had he hated knowing about his heritage more than he did right then.

“Fine, I’ll go. But I don’t need a watcher. I am more than capable of taking care of myself. You and I both know that. And it is much easier to deal with anyone that may get wind of my location if I am alone. Having someone either interfering or uselessly getting in the way will only get me killed.”

“It’s not my call, and it’s definitely not yours. You will have a watcher, but I’ve been assured by the marshal that this individual will follow your orders to the letter unless they are a direct threat to your own life. I cannot, nor would I, change that.” Fintan pushed up from his chair to come stand by his side. “I know that your heritage weighs heavily on you. I wish I could carry the burden with you, my friend. But I will do whatever is necessary to keep you alive. Once the general public of Craegin and Imara know about you, and your lineage, then you can step from the shadows and into the light.”

Snorting at his words, Markus shot a look over his shoulder to the other man. “That was rather poetic, Fin. Love has changed you more than even I realized. Although I don’t know if this new streak you are showing is for the better.”

“Shut up,” Fin muttered.

Amusement coursed through him for a moment. He knew Fintan was doing it on purpose, and that made Markus appreciate the man’s friendship all the more. But the knowledge that he, Markus Rothschild, was the only living heir to the crowns of both Craegin and Imara… The reason he was the only living heir was tragic, according to many. His parents had both been killed while on a tramp headed for a fundraiser event on a Craegin moon base. They and nine others including the pilots died instantly. Markus had not been with them like he normally would have, because he’d come down with a cold and had been too ill to travel.

The official report was a rogue micro-meteor shower had compromised the tramp’s hull. While it had been a cold comfort to him at only ten summers old at the time, he had at least known the reason why they would never be coming home again. There had been closure. Now that he knew about his lineage he had to wonder if perhaps someone had taken them out. But that didn’t really work, either, because he was still alive. Why kill his parents but leave him breathing?

It was only one of many questions that haunted him since he had been told he was descended from royalty. The royalty, if he wanted to get technical. Shaking his head mentally to get back on topic, he turned partially to look at Fintan without straining. “Basically, you are telling me I’m stuck with the marshal’s chosen watcher.”

Fin nodded. “Whoever it is will probably be nothing more than a large, silent shadow that lurks in the background while you try to keep from going insane with boredom.”

Right, there was that issue, too. “What exactly am I supposed to do during this unwanted hiatus from my career path? I don’t mind the idea of a couple days of downtime to relax and rest, but being stuck somewhere indefinitely is less appealing.”

“I’m sure we can find something for you to do. You might even be able to finish all those reports I know you have been ignoring.”

Markus plastered on his best innocent face and blinked at his commanding officer. “Reports? Whatever do you mean, General? I always do my reports promptly.”

Fintan’s eyebrows climbed up his forehead at that bold-faced lie. “Right. Do them all up. Wherever you are going will likely have the capability of secure transmissions, so you can send them all back here and I will sign off on them before submitting them. Sadie can make sure there are no electronic tags on any of those files that could potentially lead back to your location.”

Sadie, Colonel Bracken Kauller’s wife and family friend to the Daykins, was a genius with anything electronic. Her doctorate in AI and destroyer programming spoke for itself, but her skills were known across the quadrants even if people did not know her name. “I will make sure all the reports are completed. I make no promises on when I will get them done, though. It will depend on wherever you and the marshal are planning to stash me and this watcher you are saddling me with. My first priority will be security since that is why I am leaving the safety of a Craegin destroyer.”

“You cannot guilt me, Markus. I do this not only for your own good but for the good of two races. All of the Craegins and Imarians need you.”

“No, you’re right.” Damn but he felt like a kid being chastised right then. “I’m sorry. This situation is not our making, but it is our responsibility to see it righted. You and the marshal believe this is the best course to take, so I will bow to your wishes and let you handle it. But swear to me one thing, Fintan.”

“What is it?”

“Be expedient handling all this. Be careful, but do not dally. I am not now nor have I ever been one to sit idly by while my friends take the risks pointed toward me.” Markus had always preferred to face whatever came at him head-on, which made having to step aside and allow others to handle things grate on his nerves.

“I’ll do all I can to make sure we all come out of this alive and in a better position. Now go pack your bag and get your reports. The tramp will be here soon to take you to the cargo vessel that will shuttle you to your destination. I know it will not be the most comfortable ride, but no one would ever expect it.”

A few more words were exchanged before Markus left Fintan to his own duties. Heading to his quarters, he mulled everything he knew over in his head yet again. Before he ever got near the symbolic throne he was to take, he was going to drive himself crazy. And that did not even take into account whatever nightmare of a watcher he was being saddled with. He was definitely not looking forward to meeting whoever it might be.

Sunday Snippet ~ Sparks of Blue by Rose Wulf #PNR #ERom #Books @RoseWulfAuthor @EvernightPub

Hello my lovelies! Thank you so much for having me today!
I’m here this time to talk about my brand new release, Sparks of Blue (Dark Light 2)! I am beyond excited for this particular book and I just know you’re going to love it!
Sparks of Blue
Dark Light series
Erotic paranormal romance
MF
Blurb:
Nearly a century ago warrior angel Kai and Nephilim Belle were lovers. Then he broke her heart and never looked back.
Now Second in Command of the angel armada, Kai knew he was the obvious choice for this long-term mission. And his job was clear: keep Belle and her patient alive. But he wasn’t prepared for the resurgence of old memories and long-ignored feelings. He’ll have to face what he did a hundred years ago if he wants a chance to be back in Belle’s arms…but even then, angels are forbidden from laying with Nephilim. If they were caught, Belle would be executed.
Born a Nephilim, Belle was neither angel nor human. But she was a healer, and she was damned good at it. Her reputation got her noticed by the armada and eventually earned her the title of Master Healer. It also earned her a terrible assignment: save the life – and therefore the soul – of a cursed human…under the protection of her ex-lover. And it turns out the chemistry they’d once shared may have been buried, but it’s a flame that could never burn out.
*Exclusive* Excerpt:
Belle shut her eyes as the demon’s energy-claws descended. His intent was clear and his grip was too strong to break. Maybe she’d have stood a chance with a weapon or if she hadn’t been trying to protect someone, but that wasn’t the situation. And this demon was clearly not the run-of-the-mill grunt. He knew what the hell he was doing.
Something crashed, and the weight of the demon lifted from her. Or perhaps she was hallucinating in the moments before death. Guess I’ll have to look.
The first thing she saw when she pried her eyes open was Kai. Standing over her with his sword drawn and a look of fury on his face. He was looking behind her. The way he was standing, in fact, would completely shield her. Unless some idiot thought falling on a blue-burning sword was a good idea.
Belle released a breath, fighting back the tears of relief that threatened to betray the fear she’d felt. It’d been a long time since she’d been truly scared for her life.
“Damn.” Kai’s grunt drew her attention again, and she realized he was already sheathing his sword. That could only have meant the demon had fled.
Not sure what to do, or how to thank him when she’d established such an “I don’t need you” attitude with him, Belle forced herself to look away. Gwen. Check on Gwen. “Gwen,” she called, pushing to her knees carefully.
“Yeah?” a mumbled voice replied from the bed.
            “Are you hurt?”
“I don’t think so.” The response was slow, indicating pain, but that didn’t mean she was lying. There was a difference between pain and injury.
Kai’s warm touch landed on her shoulder and Belle jerked her attention around to find him kneeling beside her. Something like concern flickered beneath his piercing blue eyes. “Let me see your arms.”
Not a question. He’d probably already glimpsed the bruises she was sure she had.
Not having the strength to argue, Belle obligingly lifted her arms. Sure enough, thick bruises were forming below her wrists. The imagery of what could have conjured bruises like that was enough to make her sick, even without the sensation of the demon’s breath on her cheek. Belle fought not to shudder. “It’s not that bad,” she said, her voice quieter than she’d intended. “I can heal it in minutes.” Thank God.
Kai landed a thumb without warning to her jaw, below her lips, and gently wiped away the traces of blood. “What else?”
Belle fought to control her breathing at his touch and let her arms return to her lap. “Nothing else. I just bit my tongue when I fell.” It was a lie, but she could heal herself easier than anyone else, anyway. Wait, was that blood? Her gaze immediately slid back down to Kai’s bicep and, sure enough, there was a line of blood still trickling over the perfectly tanned skin. “Kai,” she mumbled, reaching out on reflex. “You’re hurt.”
He caught her stretching fingers in his gently, his touch sending jolts of nearly-dizzying electricity up her arm. He hadn’t been this gentle with her, or this lingeringly close to her, in… almost a century. Remember what happened, Belle. Her heart was running on adrenaline right now, and adrenaline made people think stupid thoughts.
“It’s nothing,” he assured her. His voice was as gentle as his touch, and her traitorous, stupid heart flickered with hope.
Belle looked down as he released her hand and glimpsed something else. Burn marks. Black burn marks on the tips of his fingers. Sucking in a breath, she snatched his hand in both of hers and turned it palm-up. “My God, Kai, you’ve been burned. How did they get you?”
“They didn’t,” he returned, attempting to pull his hand free. “I used their weapon against them.”
“No wonder,” she mumbled, holding his wrist tight and laying her palm over his fingers. “Hold still, you stubborn idiot.” There wasn’t nearly enough venom in that statement. What was wrong with her?
Why did it bother her so much to see him wounded?
She wasn’t nearly ready to face that answer. She’d fought so hard, for so long, to hate him. She had every right. After what he’d said when he up and left, any woman with half an ounce of self-respect would hate him. But she didn’t, not really.

Excerpt:

Emily gently closed her chamber door and swept down the hall, pausing outside of his room. The glow of the fireplace danced across the floor under the door, but all was silent. Perhaps he was reading from the privacy of the curtained platform bed or standing in the window, basking in the view the west side of the manor offered.

She quietly opened his door and closed it behind her.
No one stirred, nor made a sound.
She took a step forward, parting her lips to call for him.
A soft moan caught her attention and uncertainty crept up her spine. She should not have proceeded, but went on to appease her curiosity. Stealing further into the room, she paused in the corner.

She caught sight of his lordship through the break of the curtains. Charles’ eyes were closed, chest exposed as his hand moved beneath the sheet barely covering his waist. Lord, he’s a sight to watch, but what exactly is he doing?

Emily moved closer, but could not make head or tails of his motions. That is, until he called out, “Emily.”

He moaned, then kicked off his sheets.

Good heavens, the sight of him was impressive. Dark, curly hair dusted his chest. His muscles so refined that the creases begged her to touch them. Dampness settled between her thighs again. What the hell is wrong with me? Did he just moan out my name?

She could see clearly now as he stroked his manhood.
Emily gasped and stepped back, bumping into a chair. Drats!

Avonlea opened his eyes.
She lost all sense of what she had stumbled upon. She should not have been there, no matter how glorious or how beautiful he looked with his eyes closed, or how impressive his body appeared. She would land straight in purgatory for this sin and many others, but she stood at the edge of the platform still.

Charles reached for the sheet to cover himself, as he should, but Emily could not help but feel disappointed at the act of modesty. “You should not be here, young lady. What sort of devil are you, for sneaking upon a bachelor’s room as such?”

But when she finds a way past his barriers with her sensual touch, Kieran realizes he must either set her free or let her into his heart.

Despite being ignored and shunned by her family, Josephine Richmond is willing to protect them at any cost. Even if it means marrying a man she’s only just met. They say he’s a beast, scarred inside and out. She knows she should be afraid, she knows she should hate him for trapping her, but she can’t. Unable to resist her attraction to her husband, Josephine’s determined to make the marriage work.  Especially when she has her own secret scars that only Kieran seems able to heal.

Excerpt
Looking down at the petrified Josephine, Kieran rationally understood why she was nervous, but he didn’t care. Not one tiny bit.
The woman was an adult, after all. She wasn’t being forced—maybe ‘manipulated’ was the word—into the marriage. To hold back the feeling of pity creeping into his conscience, he remembered the look on her face when she saw his scars at their one meeting before the wedding. The repulsed reaction was just like all those women before her who trembled at his disfiguration, and reminded him that like those vapid bimbos, she was as superficial as them.
It was the main reason he felt little guilt in picking her purely based on looks. She’d been stunning as a sixteen-year-old girl and now six years later, she’d grown into her body and was absolutely beautiful. Her figure was something out of a 1950s pinup: smooth curves and dips, filling out in all the right places. Unbelievably fuckable.
Her skin was porcelain smooth with a few freckles across the bridge of her nose that looked a bit out a place on her alabaster skin yet gave her something unique. But it was her mouth that really killed him: luscious and pink, with a distinct curve along the upper lip that he wanted to lick. They looked permanently swollen and ever since their brief meeting to discuss the prenuptial agreement, he’d spend many a night imagining those lips wrapped around his hard cock. At least that hadn’t been damaged by the landmine.
Josephine’s innocence practically radiated off of her. Her father had informed Kieran that she’d attended a strict boarding school before returning home and now attended college through an online-learning program. Considering her father’s social standing, her isolation seemed suspect, but Kieran didn’t let himself dwell on it too much.
Kieran watched her lips now as she began to speak the words that committed her to the marriage. Committed her to him.
“I-I-I do.” The tremor in her voice was audible.
It was now time to kiss the bride, he heard the priest inform them, and he waited for the moment of revulsion to cross Josephine’s face as she turned to face him, just as it had two weeks ago. But all he saw was slight trepidation as she looked up into his eyes. Her gaze didn’t even wander across his face and onto the scars. She remained looking up at Kieran, focusing intently on his own hazel eyes. Why wasn’t she recoiling?
Irritated by the feelings of confusion her stoic stare caused in him, he wrapped one arm around her waist, whilst grasping the other behind her neck, and firmly pulled her flush against him. Leaning down, he smashed his lips against her perfect mouth. He stiffened as he felt her small hands grasp his biceps.
Kieran expected her to subtly try and push him off her, but inside she melted into his arms. Not only was she not pushing him away, she seemed to be willingly letting him draw her small, soft body against his own. She didn’t even stiffen in his grasp. Her hips pressed against him and as he pulled away from her mouth, he heard a faint sigh escape from her lush lips.
Almost as if she’d enjoyed it.
Aware of their location, he willed himself to step back. He released his wife from his grasp but moved to grasp her hand and turned to walk out of the church. Kieran glanced over at her, amazed to see that a flush had spread across her cheeks and neck. As if she’d relished his touch. No, it was impossible to think that she was anything but repulsed by him. After all, he was a monster.
Nothing more than a beast.

Spotlight ~ Made For Her by Jessica E. Subject ~ #TopTenList #sfromance #newrelease #military #futuristic @JSubject

Made For Her teaser

Good morning!

Today the Spotlight shines on Jessica E. Subject. Jessica’s latest release, MADE FOR HER is now available!

Jessica stopped by to share her Ten Favorite Lines from Made For Her (without any spoilers)

  1. She refused to listen to the public refer to the clones as slugs. Daniel had died bringing them to life and she couldn’t have his work, his creations, insulted in front of her. Sure, they weren’t born the same way as her, but they were still people, and she had a new squadron of clones waiting for her on the tarmac.
  2. “So why is this one out of the lab and in my squadron? Why couldn’t he be trained by someone else, somewhere else?” General Madison smiled, and she had a feeling she wasn’t going to like his answer. “Because he wanted to be trained by the best. You are our best instructor and have turned out our best pilots. Why would we send him anywhere else?”
  3. “I know you slugs have all completed basic training, but that was a walk in the park compared to what I’m going to put you through.” The major’s chiseled face revealed a slight grin, mocking them. “When I’m done with you, you’ll wish those bastards at Onatria had smashed your Petri dishes before your cells began to divide.”
  4. She had to get him out of the house. He did crazy things to her mind. And when he’d stood so close, all thoughts of her original plans to head to the local pub vaporized. She wanted more. Staring into his ocean-blue eyes reminded her of the nights she would gaze into Daniel’s after they’d made love.
  5. “I’m sure there are many secrets at this base. We’re about to make another.”
  6. “I’m sure you loved him very much, but it’s been ten years, Mikayla.” He brushed his fingers down her cheek. “You deserve more than a good fuck. You deserve to be happy.”
  7. The drawer held only one box of condoms, but a multitude of toys, sexual toys. He’d hit the mother lode.
  8. Clones were always given crap jobs as punishment rather than the usual condemnation on his record. But no sentence would make him stop seeing her. He’d clean the dirtiest, shit-stained toilets every day just to spend his nights next to her.
  9. She thumped her foot down to gain her balance and raised her forearm. Lunging forward, she slammed him against the door, her arm pressing against his throat. “Don’t you ever touch me.” Releasing her hold, she grabbed the front of his shirt and tossed him outside. “You’re finished, Major.”
  10. “Gladys, I’m in love.”

Dare rolled off his cot then left the barracks, his body sore from the last few weeks of hell. Major Thompson had sent them right from the classroom to physical training, as if they were still in basic. When they ran flight simulations, Thompson assigned him the first officer’s seat rather than the captain’s. The only time Dare had the chance to fly as captain, he’d fucked up the take-off and crashed the simulated plane. Not an ideal way to start, but he required more practice. His squadron only had two weeks left before their first flight, and he felt no more ready to fly a plane than he had a month ago. He’d studied his flight manuals every night, but they did not compare to practical experience. Somehow, some way, he had to convince Colonel Jones to come back and train him. He needed to be prepared.

He walked up to the colonel’s house and knocked on the door. Waiting for her to answer, Dare noticed his foot tapping. When had he started that habit?

“D32, what are you doing on my doorstep? I told you never to come back.”

He spun around to see her standing at the end of the path leading to her house, another man only a few steps behind her. The major. An unexpected, gut-wrenching anger filled him, making his blood boil.

“Go home now, Thompson,” she said. “You are wasting your time.”

The man leaned forward as if to kiss her, but she stepped to the side. Dare held in the urge to punch him. Violence wouldn’t win him any points with the woman whose help he needed.

Thompson turned toward him, his gaze ready to kill. “And yet there is a cadet on your doorstep.”

She placed a hand on the major’s chest. “He’s wasting his time, too. But he’s my problem to deal with.”

Colonel Jones grimaced as Thompson stormed away, before advancing toward her house and Dare. “Lieutenant, are we going to have a problem here or are you going to leave now?”

Dare put his hands up. “I have no problems. I just want to know why you left when you first saw me; why you never came back.”

“I told you, I was reassigned, though it’s none of your business.”

“Oh, really? I think it is my business since you asked to be reassigned.” He shouldn’t have said that. It was information he’d overheard from a private conversation. But he was on a roll. “It was because of me, right? You hate slugs, and you can’t stand the fact that one of us may look like your husband.”

“That’s enough.”

She glared at him, but he kept going. He had to know. “You hate the idea of training me. You hate me.”

Her bottom lip trembled. “I don’t hate you.”

Gods, what had he done? Was she going to…cry? He’d never seen any of his commanding officers show any sign of emotion other than anger. But he couldn’t help himself. “Why, then?”

“Because you weaken me.” She slipped by him and tried to unlock her door.

“I weaken you? I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

She fumbled as she tried to insert the key chip. Then she turned toward him. “You’re exactly like Daniel. Your mannerisms, your voice, and that annoying foot tap when you’re impatient. I can’t concentrate when I’m around you. I can’t be strong, be a leader.”

She opened the door, but Dare made sure she couldn’t close it. He used his body as an obstruction.

She gasped. “You can’t come in. Leave me alone.”

He pushed the door open, surprised she hadn’t yet reminded him of his rank. “I can help you be strong.”

Her gaze met his, and he shuddered at the vulnerability in her eyes. “I….”

“I need you to train me.” He longed to touch her, imagined the soft ply of her skin as he ran the tips of his fingers across every inch. Pulling her toward him crossed his mind, but he needed her training more than her body. “I’ve only run one simulation as captain.”

She reeled back, probably for the best. “What? You should be running at least one every day.”

“I know. That’s why I’m here.” He yearned to hold her, to feel her breath on his skin. Thank goodness she hadn’t looked down. She wouldn’t appreciate the salute he had for her.

“I can’t believe Major Thompson is being such an ass. Actually, yes I can. I’ll talk to General Madison tonight. You’ll be back in the simulators tomorrow, as captain.” She turned and stomped away. Had she dismissed him?

“Wait…please, Colonel Jones. I need more practice than that. I need to be the best.”

Her hard eyes and pursed lips gave him a jolt when she turned back toward him. “I’ll see that the general allows you some extra practice time.”
