This week’s tease comes from Illusions.

Brady has just had one of his visions, events yet to come and it gripped him while he was on the phone with Isabella Knowles who he has kept his relationship with her secret. But he’s falling harder and faster than he ever thought possible. Here, she’s run to his apartment after the line went dead while his vision took over.

All he could hear was pounding. And it felt like someone had taken a battering ram to his head. Brady opened his eyes, only to see the white, cracked ceiling of his bedroom. Disoriented, he sat up, prayed the hammering in his head would stop. Only then did he realize the noise in his head were not the only insistent thumps he could hear.

Someone was at his front door. He paused with his hands on his knees and allowed himself a moment to focus and stop the room from spinning.

Normally he would sit and let the memory of his vision come to him, but for the first time in a while, he didn’t need time to remember this one. What he’d seen was just as clear as his feet in front of him. Only in this instance, a fear like none other devoured him. His heart pounded as though it would beat right out of him, as well as break, if it were to come true.illusions-lrg

“Brady?”

His head jerked up at Isabella’s voice beside him. He saw the only person in his life who truly mattered to him. It scared him, but he needed to touch her. Now. The sooner, the better. He pulled her close, his arms around her waist, buried his face in her belly, and inhaled the scent that was solely hers. He craved it twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year. It was all her. His woman. The one he loved more than life itself.

“What happened? What’s wrong?”

He heard the worry in her voice, and squeezed his arms around her tighter. If he could pull her into his body, he would so she would remain safe forever and they’d never be apart.

“Christ, Brady, you’re killing me. Talk to me.” She tried to move away from him, but he couldn’t bear to let her go. “God damn it. Let go. You’re squeezing too tight.”

She was probably right and he loosened his grip on her. He tugged her down to his lap.

She squirmed, tried to rise and get away from him, but he held her tight. “You are being ridiculous. What happened?”

“How did you get in, babe?” He looked into her baby-blue eyes, saw varied emotions running rampant. Concern, confusion, even anger, but the concern warmed his heart.

“You were just gone. I heard you groan my name and then nothing. I thought I better come over and check on you. Just to be sure you were okay.”

Her nonchalant tone almost made him smiled. Underneath it all, he heard the worry and wouldn’t let her get away with it.

“But the door was locked, Bella. How did you get in?”

A blush stole over her face, and he couldn’t contain his grin. He didn’t want her to question him too much about his vision. She accepted his visions better than anyone else and understood what his painful groan would mean. Until he sorted through it, he wasn’t sure he wanted to share it with her. He would have to warn her, tell her some of what he’d seen so she would be prepared.

“I owe you a new door, actually.” As she blushed, he watched her stumble over what she’d done. “I kept pounding but got no answer, so I kicked it in.”

“You broke my door by kicking it in?” He wanted to laugh. And she said she didn’t care for him at all.

Excerpt, Kacey Hammell, © 2016

“Detective James, what can I do for you?” Captain Coleman Douglass leaned back in his chair and looked the detective in the eye. Deep down, Cole suspected what Ethan James was about to tell him. He didn’t relish the fact his suspicions would be confirmed, but he’d known for weeks that this night was inevitable.
He only thanked God there were no fatalities.
“Sir, I need to talk to you about Detective Knowles. It’s urgent.” “Sit down, Detective. Let me get you a cup of coffee and—”
“Thank you sir, but no,” Ethan interrupted. “I didn’t come for coffee.”
Okay, obviously this isn’t a social call. He watched Ethan draw in a deep breath, and scan the room, as if unable to meet Cole’s eyes.
“Well, all right then. Say what you have to say. What about Detective Knowles?”
Just saying her name was like pouring syrup over flapjacks. Alicia Knowles was the sugar in his coffee, the up to his down, the left to his right.
They’d first met two years ago. Both had been on vacation in Miami. Sun, sand, and surf—it had all changed his life forever. Cole had never thought his first vacation in three years would lead to love.
On his last night in Miami, he’d sat by the sand at midnight, the light from his beach house behind him reflecting over the water. On one of the benches along the boardwalk, unwilling to believe he needed to return to work, he’d listened to the breeze, the sounds and movements of the waves crashing against one another.
He wasn’t sure how long he’d sat there, lost in his own thoughts, when he felt the bench beside him shift. He’d looked over to his left and had never glanced away again.
Not the time, Cole. Not the time. Think about her later.
“I think she came back too soon.” Ethan cleared his throat. “To the job, I mean.”
To suspect it and then hear the words spoken aloud didn’t settle within Cole. He’d seen it for weeks, in the shadows beneath her eyes, watched the far-off look that settled over her face more times than he liked. He thought she might be reliving the past and the ordeal she’d gone through. Dammit, he wanted to take Parker Feeney apart with his bare hands. Too bad the bastard was already dead.
Cole’s heart had ached at the pain, sadness, and even fear on Alicia’s face too many times to count. What he wouldn’t give to be able to erase the memories from her mind.
“Christ, Ethan, sit the fuck down. I’m getting a crick in my neck.” He got up from behind his desk, and moved to the small table in the corner where the coffeemaker sat.
He filled two mugs with steaming brew, added two sugars and milk to his, then turned to Ethan. Thankful the guy had taken a seat, Cole felt sorry for him. He waited with elbows parked on his knees, head between his hands, and forlorn, as if he’d lost his best friend. “You take your coffee straight or…?”
“Straight,” Ethan mumbled.
Cole carried both mugs back to his desk, placing one in front of Ethan. He sat with mug in hand and took a satisfying drink. Time to get things out in the open. “Why do you feel Detective Knowles returned to duty too soon? What happened tonight?”
Ethan sat up, dragged both hands through his hair, and leaned his head back to stare at the ceiling. “Sir, have you ever done something that would change your life forever? Even though it would be for someone’s own good and well-being, you still hesitated because in mere hours, they could end up despising you?”
Ethan lowered his chin and stared at Cole through confused and worried eyes.
Cole’s heart went out to the guy, but he suspected Alicia had to be taken off the street. He just needed confirmation of the fact.
“Yeah, I have, but I got over it. You have to do what is best for yourself and your partner, not to mention your fellow officers who could be called out to a scene with you two. And let’s not forget the citizens on the street. There is more than just one person’s life on the line if your partner can’t handle the job and something goes awry. You can’t let it get personal. Sounds cold, but it’s a harsh world in which we live. I don’t have to tell you that.” Cole set his mug on his desk, sat back in the chair, and crossed both arms over his chest. “Tell me what happened, Ethan.”
“Sir—” Ethan began.
“Call me Cole. You should know by now I don’t stand on ceremony.” Even though he had only been with Precinct Fifteen for about sixteen weeks, he had been welcomed well by all but one detective in the division. The only one who hadn’t been as welcoming was the woman Ethan obviously needed to discuss.
After he’d replaced her father when he’d retired, Alicia’s glares and icy façade whenever he was present let Cole know she disapproved of his status. He was sure she hated him for taking her dad’s place.
Of all the critics he’d been forced to deal with since he took the new job, her opinion of him was the only one that cut him to the quick. Alicia used their work relationship as a wall between them. He couldn’t really blame her. It was one of the reasons he didn’t act upon his feelings for her, or try to rekindle the spark.
Not yet anyway.
Ethan must not know about Alicia’s discomfort with me. If he did, he might not be so quick to speak up.
She would no doubt be livid about Ethan’s recommendation to take her off the street. She’d be even more irate that Cole would sign the order.
“Yeah.” Ethan cleared his throat. “It’s been nearly six months since the night Detective Knowles was kidnapped. The first thing we saw when we got to the scene tonight was Monica Fuller gagged, her body on the ground. It was like seeing Ali, uh, Detective Knowles, as she was that night when we found her in a similar condition. Tonight, she went pale, seemed to stagger, almost as if she was confused and off balance. It shook her up so bad, she never once asked about the suspect. It was very much unlike her. Usually in a case like this, if she sees the suspect, she’s the first on foot after him.”
Ethan stared Cole in the eye. His expression was pained and a little bit sad. “She even tried to lift the body from the cement where Fuller had dragged the victim. That it was against procedure didn’t bother her.”
“If you were aware it was against protocol, why did you allow her to get that close to the victim, Detective James?” Cole had a pretty good idea why, but he needed the full version of Ethan’s story before he could make the decision that was already ninety-nine percent final in his mind.
“I did it because Ali seemed so agitated. I know she was reliving what happened to her, and part of me remembered, too. What if the night we found Ali had gone differently? What if we were too late?”
A shiver ran through Cole at Ethan’s words. Just the thought of things playing out any differently chilled him to the bone.
A second chance. It’s what you have here. Remember that, Douglass.
Ethan took a deep breath and reached forward to retrieve his coffee. He took a swig of the warm liquid then continued. “I know I may have been a bit biased and in the wrong myself, Captain, to be that close, contaminating the scene. I’ll take the reprimand for it. But as soon as I got her in the car, Ali calmed down considerably. I’d hoped it would get her head back into the game, but it didn’t.”
Cole leaned back in his chair, hesitant to ask, but he had to. “What happened after you got her away from the victim?”
Ethan looked toward the window to Cole’s left, seeing what, he didn’t know. But the sorrow on his face told the whole story. Cole knew he wouldn’t like the next words.
“After the M.E. got to the scene, he was surprised to find the body had been moved slightly. He was really lit up about it and….” Ethan took a gulp of his coffee and set it back on the desk, almost sloshing the dark liquid over the rim. “I tried to explain it all to him, but he wouldn’t listen. He got loud. Before I could stop her, Detective Knowles was out of the car, angry at him for what she called callousness. Then Alicia just decked him. I have never seen her lose it like this while on the job.”
It was worse than he’d thought. Sighing, Cole picked up the yellow memo pad to his left and held it out toward Ethan. “Write it down. All of it. I’m sure the M.E. will bring this to my attention before the day is out. I’m surprised I haven’t heard about it already.”
Ethan quickly averted his eyes, without taking the pad.
Cole suspected there was more to come. He dropped the pad back on his desk. “What else happened out there, Detective? I can’t have omissions on this. I need to handle it,” Cole said, putting the weight of authority in his voice. “I need to know all of it.”
“Detective Isabella Knowles arrived on the scene. She took it over and settled the M.E. down. It was over and done with. I doubt he’ll make a complaint. Hell, he was probably just pissed off at being dragged out of bed. Or maybe being decked by a woman. I don’t know. I shouldn’t have mentioned it.”
Cole threw his pen on the desk. “Don’t make excuses, James. You know damn well these incidents have to be reported. You and Detective Knowles should not have moved the victim at all, and Knowles shouldn’t be on the job if she can’t handle it.”
“But Cole—”
“No, I’ve heard enough.” Cole tossed the memo pad toward him. Ethan caught it, but just barely. “All of it. You came to me and you can be certain I’ll take care of this matter. A citation will also be put in your folder about disturbing the victim. The only reason you aren’t suspended right now is because your record is squeaky clean. Don’t make me change my mind.”
Cole reached for the phone on his right. He’d order Alicia to his office within the next thirty minutes or he’d go get her. Rage boiled within him. It was as if a beast wanted to claw its way through him, manic to be released. He’d known she shouldn’t be back on the job. To risk her pensions, suspension, everything important to her because of her anger…. He was furious she couldn’t manage it.
It just showed how out of control she was. She couldn’t keep herself in check. But his feelings for her had shaded the truth. He was as much at fault as she was.
“Cole… damn it. I know you have to talk to her about all of this, but what consequences will she face?”
Cole’s fingers tightened on the telephone receiver. His jaw clenched. He understood Ethan’s loyalty to Alicia. Dammit, he’d walk to hell and back for her, too. She’d touched him in more ways than one the night they’d first met. He wanted more of the pleasure and the swell of emotions that consumed him when he was with her. She had made him feel ten feet tall, strong, and powerful. She’d made him feel like a man—her man.
“You know exactly what consequences your partner will face. You realized it before you came in here. While I should suspend your ass, too, I need one of you on this case that has insight into Fuller. It might take anyone new too much time to catch up. But you’re on desk duty only. Stay put in your office unless I direct you otherwise. Now, take the pad, head somewhere private, and write down everything that happened this morning. Have it on my desk in an hour.” Cole punched the numbers on the phone, angrier than he had ever been in his life. “You’re dismissed, Detective James. I’ll handle things from here.”
As the phone rang at the other end of the line, Cole watched Ethan leave his office and prayed he could keep himself from killing Alicia Knowles with his bare hands. He was in a tough spot as her boss and as someone who cared about her. But he had to stop the downhill slide her life was on before she got herself killed.
He’d see to it that she was protected.
Even from herself.

More about Illusions…

Detective Isabella Knowles, a tough-as-nails cop, lives by the law, and knows what she wants out of life. And it doesn’t include marriage or all that comes with it. Everything Isabella has ever known seems like an illusion when a new relationship makes her feel more alive than ever before.  She isn’t happy about it and fights it every step of the way.

Burned by his fiancée years ago, seer and P.I., Brady Jacobs never wants another commitment in his life.  But his bachelorhood and heart are threatened when he has one of his visions and see a killer striking too close to the woman he has recently come to love.

Danger lurks close to home and neither Brady nor Isabella like that they can’t control every situation…especially matters of the heart.

Mid Week Tease: “She had to survive.” #MWTease

MWTease15Happy Wednesday Friends! First week of March. I hope Mother Nature decides to be kind this month. Even though last night was snow and some freezing drizzle. Hopefully there will be no more of that!!

This week’s tease comes from GUARDING MIDNIGHT, my most recent release. Shree’s been kidnapped and trying to think smart.

Copyright, KaceyHammell, 2015
Shree struggled against the rope binding her arms behind her.
The two thugs who’d taken her from the club had dumped her in a filthy sparse room with only a single mattress and a dim light on the ceiling. The smell of it hit her the moment they dragged her into the room and shoved her on the floor.
Sweat, urine, and rotting meat.
It’s what she imagined death would smell like—pungent, filthy decaying, and eye-watering. GMtoppickShe’d never smelled anything remotely like it before. She’d remember it forever.
They’d stripped her of everything except her leotard. The cold immediately washed over her body. The air conditioning had to be on full blast. In the back of her mind, she knew it was to throw her off, keep her on edge and eventually make her weak. The chill would set into her limbs and she’d be too shaky to fight them.
If only they knew the tactics of her ex, they wouldn’t be so quick to count her out just yet.
The creep in the backseat had enjoyed groping her. She’d slapped him away for as long as she could, but eventually, she’d shut her mind off as best she could. She’d been through it too many years to not zone it out. It always killed her to do so because it was as if she was giving in, but it was also what kept her sane. She swore she’d never go allow such trespasses against her body ever again, but tonight, she had no choice.
Gavin would come for her. He’d save her. So she had to survive.
One more time.
For him.
Keys in the lock caught her attention. She scurried back on the bed until her back was firm against the wall. She couldn’t allow them to crowd her from all sides. Hopefully, it would work.

Mid Week Tease: “Getting involved with him would be a very bad idea.” #MWTease

MWTease15Happy Wednesday Friends! First week of March. I hope Mother Nature decides to be kind this month. Even though last night was snow and some freezing drizzle. Hopefully there will be no more of that!!

Special thanks to Sandra Bunino for rallying authors together to share teases every week.

~~~~~~~
This week’s tease comes from GUARDING MIDNIGHT, my just recently contracted book with Evernight Publishing. Release date TBD.
Here is a bit of the UNEDITED version since it hasn’t gone through edits just yet. And I’m THRILLED to show off my NEW COVER for it this week too.
In previous wks, you’ve met Gavin & Midnight a bit, here they are generating some heat together…
“I’ve dealt with rowdy customers before, Gavin. There’s nothing I haven’t been able to handle.”
He frowned at her.
For heaven’s sake. He needed to stop looking at her like that—fire in his eyes, totally focused on her and tension radiating off that spectacular bod.
GuardingMidnight-evernightpublishing-jayaheer2015-FinalCoverA shiver snaked along her spine. A thirty-minute workout with him…
No. Now was not the time for those thoughts.
“Look, Shree, these aren’t some drunk, grab-ass happy customers
who want to feel you up. I’ve met men like these before and they can be very dangerous. They’ll use whatever they can against Charlie, and that means you. Especially since you’re the star attraction. I don’t want you in harm’s way at all. Got it?”
Oh, this man was asking for trouble—in more ways than one. She wasn’t used to having anyone tell her what to do. Not like this.
His brooding scowl, the tight body…she needed a cold shower…stat.
Lifting her right leg over, she got off the spin bike and stood on shaky legs. Wincing, she realized in her
attempts to block this man from her mind, she’d pushed herself a little further than necessary.
“Now you look, bud. I understand you’re here to protect me from drunks, cretins, and all low-lifes who come in here.” She swiped the towel off the bars and slung it around her neck. Hands on hips, she glared at him. “But I’m a big girl and I know how to take care of myself. I don’t want, nor do I need, any macho man speaking at me. Now back off.”
Nostrils flaring, her gaze stayed locked on the burning embers he scorched her with. Refusing to back away, knowing if she did then he’d run roughshod over her until the end of time, she drew in small breaths and waited.
She didn’t have to wait long.
“You women are so pig-headed.” He inched a step closer. “You never know when to shut up and just listen. I’m trying to take care of all of you here.”
“Then go tell some of the other girls. You’ve ordered me to do what you want. Fine. You’re done. We’re done.” Chin up, Shree turned away.
He grabbed her arm, startling her. She spun back, legs unsteady and reached out blindly as she began to fall.
The world spun around her, and she braced to hit the floor.
Warmth wrapped her waist, and then darkness smashed into her.
A deep groan brought her back. Scanning the room, the realization hit her. She was spread out over Gavin. She gasped. His strong body had broken her fall, though she’d probably end up with some bruises. He gazed at her with his beautiful cognac eyes.
Getting involved with him would be a very bad idea. She had to study, work hard to finish school and get away from clubs for good. She searched his gaze, searching for what she didn’t know. Maybe some sign that her heart wouldn’t be bruised after he was done with it.
“Shree,” Jesus. Her name rolled off his lips, almost like a growl. The rasp put her body in overdrive.
Mid Week Tease: “She was going to hell from lusting after this stranger.” #MWTease
MWTease15Happy Wednesday Friends! I hope everyone is doing well. And staying warm. The cold snap hasn’t subsided here one bit. It’s become very discouraging to get out of bed!
Special thanks to Sandra Bunino for rallying authors together to share teases every week.
~~~~~~~

This week’s tease is another that comes from GUARDING MIDNIGHT, my just recently contracted book with Evernight Publishing. Release date TBD.

Here is a bit of the UNEDITED version since it hasn’t gone through edits just yet.

Shree — aka Midnight — gets her first look at Gavin, her “bodyguard”.

The last forty-five minutes had been a blessing. She’d squeezed a lot of study time in and her workout had been bliss. She chuckled. Most people would think her crazy for enjoying workouts. But if there was no enjoyment in it, then why bother?
It was a mantra she lived by.
Humming, she picked up her pace and tried recalling different medications, temperatures, comingsoonand syringe types in her mind. Deep in study mode, her eyes flew open as a dinging sound filled the room.
She glanced to the right.
Men came in all shapes and sizes with various builds, physiques and widths, and she understood that. But this man, whom she was sure could barely fit through the doorway, was one unlike anything she’d ever seen before.
Tall, at least six-six. Herculean shoulders, biceps that the short sleeves of his white t-shirt had no hope of getting over, and hard thighs were easy to determine even beneath the sweats he wore, which probably got their workout from just carrying this man around every day. Hell even her long arms wouldn’t be able to get around his midsection.
Damn if she didn’t want to try though.
But it was her most favorite feature on a man that captured her attention completely.
His head—bald, tanned…she had a weakness for his kind. To her there was a wildness, a stronger soul to a man who kept things clean and crisp.
His attention zoomed in on her as the door shut behind him.
The amber hue of his eyes reminded her of fine Cognac; clear, luminous and golden like honey.
It was the alcoholic drink she was most partial to. Oh yes, she could get drunk on him for sure. She was going to hell from lusting after this stranger. There was no time in her life for tangling with the opposite sex.
No matter how damn sexy and sinful he is.

Here is a bit of the UNEDITED version since it hasn’t gone through edits just yet. I hope you enjoy a bit of Gavin. GM is a “Roadhouse meets Burlesque” type feel.  Here, he’s just entered the club where he’ll be protector/bouncer for a while, and notices the talented “Midnight” for the first time…

The music picked up tempo, filling the area with rapid rhythms and a lot of bass.
Rock beats from a single on the last Nickelback album shook the floor. He couldn’t keep from tapping against the bar. His Army regimen played the band’s albums continuously. Hell, they were all Canadian and had to support home-country talent.
A blur of red and black rushing out on stage caught his attention. A woman skulked along at the front of the stage, bending, twirling and angling her hot, sexy bod, and would
comingsoonno-doubt capture every man’s attention when she performed.
Gavin swallowed hard, his eyes peeled to the sexy display in front of him.
Red sports bra and tight spandex shorts barely contained her curvy, tanned body dancing at lightning speed around the stage.
Long, toned legs stretched, her body twirled the pole as if it was made for her. Though she wore barely-there spandex, she didn’t give off a stripper vibe. Her thighs clung to the metal showing off strong muscles. Without moving her legs from the pole, she let go with her hands and planted them firmly on the floor. She moved like a worm as she stayed suspended, the pole between her legs as her arms held her up. Her tight, large breasts were so tempting. His mouth watered.
The woman was skilled and in-tune with her body, and with what she had to offer.
And boy, if she didn’t have a lot to offer.
Her breasts were definitely more than a handful, which was just how he liked them. Small, medium, large, and bountiful…as long as he could stick his dick in between the mounds and fuck them till his load burst all over a woman’s chin, lips, chest, neck, and in her hair. He loved to see his pleasure all over a woman.
His mouth watered because of the seductive goddess on stage.
Her long, dark and wavy hair clung to her face and shoulders, spinning around as much as she did. Bends, kicks, gymnast moves…he was impressed.
A flick of her hair, she turned and glanced back over her shoulder, her hips swaying to the distinct bass. Facing the empty seats, she covered the stage, her movements skilled and quick. He watched, transfixed at the many steps and could only guess at the training this woman needed to have in order to make it look so easy.
As the song ended, she bent at the waist, breathing deep. Her gaze caught on his.
He drew in a deep breath.
Damn, those dark depths laser focused on his, holding him in place. Desire coursed through him, pulling at him to forget his reason for being here and find out more about her.
Beautiful. He loved everything about her gorgeous face. From her high cheek bones to the perfectly shaped lips that looked luscious and tasty from where he sat.
What he wouldn’t give to claim the first taste. Of those lips and anywhere else from head to toe.
