This week’s tease comes from Illusions.

Isabella Knowles has kept her relationship with Brady Jacobs a secret from everyone including her family. Now she’s starting to realize that perhaps she’d been only fooling herself to think that she could get away with no entanglements…

Her current lover had just heard about a night, albeit long ago, between her and another man. She couldn’t help but wonder what he thought, if it would bother him. From the angry look on his face when she finally met his eyes, she had her answer. It bothered him a lot.

illusions-lrg“I hope I am not interrupting anything crucial, detectives.” Brady’s detached tone raised her ire.

Who was he to be pissed? She didn’t care about his past relationships and what she and Connor didn’t come close to that. But one night of unbridled, crazy sex with Connor didn’t even compare to having sex with Brady. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing it, though.

“What brings you down here?” With nonchalance, as if she had no cares in the world, she made her way to her chair and sat down. She tossed the Gazette on top of the desk and took a sip of her coffee.

“Have a seat, man.” Connor motioned to the small loveseat in their office, then moved to his desk and sat on the corner of it.

Poor guy seems nervous, she thought with amusement. It was a bit awkward, but really, they were all adults.

Brady looked from one to the other, holding her gaze for too long. She looked away. She picked up a file from her desk, hoping he would get on with why he was paying them a visit.

“I came to tell you I had a glimpse of Melody Mason in the grocery parking lot.” Brady didn’t seem too happy about sharing the information but they hurled questions at him.

“What do you mean? What did you see?” Her voice seemed louder than her partner’s. “Did you see the unsub? Anything of his face?”

“Whoa, whoa, you two.” Brady held up a hand, staying their questions and offered Connor a file. “Everything I know is in there. After I got up about six this morning and had a shower, I sat down to get my thoughts on paper. It’s all there.”

She hurried to Connor’s side, placing an arm over his neck and reading over his shoulder. This could be the break they were looking for. Looking up, she saw Brady watching them. There was a naked look in his eyes, a raw intensity she had never seen before.

When he glanced at her arm on Connor’s neck, she quickly removed it, cursing at herself for letting his obvious upset get to her.

God, one would think he was her boyfriend. She couldn’t breathe. Oh, God

This week’s tease comes from Illusions.

Brady has just had one of his visions, events yet to come and it gripped him while he was on the phone with Isabella Knowles who he has kept his relationship with her secret. But he’s falling harder and faster than he ever thought possible. Here, she’s run to his apartment after the line went dead while his vision took over.

(c) Kacey Hammell, 2017

All he could hear was pounding. And it felt like someone had taken a battering ram to his head. Brady opened his eyes, only to see the white, cracked ceiling of his bedroom. Disoriented, he sat up, prayed the hammering in his head would stop. Only then did he realize the noise in his head were not the only insistent thumps he could hear.

Someone was at his front door. He paused with his hands on his knees and allowed himself a moment to focus and stop the room from spinning.

Normally he would sit and let the memory of his vision come to him, but for the first time in a while, he didn’t need time to remember this one. What he’d seen was just as clear as his feet in front of him. Only in this instance, a fear like none other devoured him. His heart pounded as though it would beat right out of him, as well as break, if it were to come true.illusions-lrg

“Brady?”

His head jerked up at Isabella’s voice beside him. He saw the only person in his life who truly mattered to him. It scared him, but he needed to touch her. Now. The sooner, the better. He pulled her close, his arms around her waist, buried his face in her belly, and inhaled the scent that was solely hers. He craved it twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year. It was all her. His woman. The one he loved more than life itself.

“What happened? What’s wrong?”

He heard the worry in her voice, and squeezed his arms around her tighter. If he could pull her into his body, he would so she would remain safe forever and they’d never be apart.

“Christ, Brady, you’re killing me. Talk to me.” She tried to move away from him, but he couldn’t bear to let her go. “God damn it. Let go. You’re squeezing too tight.”

She was probably right and he loosened his grip on her. He tugged her down to his lap.

She squirmed, tried to rise and get away from him, but he held her tight. “You are being ridiculous. What happened?”

“How did you get in, babe?” He looked into her baby-blue eyes, saw varied emotions running rampant. Concern, confusion, even anger, but the concern warmed his heart.

“You were just gone. I heard you groan my name and then nothing. I thought I better come over and check on you. Just to be sure you were okay.”

Her nonchalant tone almost made him smiled. Underneath it all, he heard the worry and wouldn’t let her get away with it.

“But the door was locked, Bella. How did you get in?”

A blush stole over her face, and he couldn’t contain his grin. He didn’t want her to question him too much about his vision. She accepted his visions better than anyone else and understood what his painful groan would mean. Until he sorted through it, he wasn’t sure he wanted to share it with her. He would have to warn her, tell her some of what he’d seen so she would be prepared.

“I owe you a new door, actually.” As she blushed, he watched her stumble over what she’d done. “I kept pounding but got no answer, so I kicked it in.”

“You broke my door by kicking it in?” He wanted to laugh. And she said she didn’t care for him at all.

This week’s tease is from my upcoming suspense title, AWAKENINGS.

Here, Detectives, Alicia has already been suspended from the force for her actions (in last week’s MWTease) and she now has her cousin to deal with, when they receive terrible news.
(C) Kacey Hammell,2016
Alicia opened her mouth to tell her to mind her own business when her cousin’s cell phone rang. Saved by the bell. Glad for the reprieve even though adrenaline boiled in her veins as if in a fight, she turned away and grabbed her empty gun holster off the couch. She put it away on the top shelf of the armoire near her front door.
“Alicia, you know you’re not to blame for what happened to Monica. It wasn’t your fault.”
Alicia should have known Brady would tap into everything she might feel and think. There was no way to hide from him. A seer, he sometimes had a sense of what others were going through—horrific or joyful. But without him, she wouldn’t be alive right now. She owed him her life and someday she hoped she’d be able to repay him.
Her hand on his arm, Alicia smiled into his clear-blue eyes. “I know. I do, but it’s really mind over matter isn’t it?” She lowered her hand and gave him a weak smile, then turned her back on KH_Awakenings_V1_400X600him. “This too shall pass…someday.”
“Ali….” Whatever Brady was about to say, Isabella’s curse rent through the apartment, interrupting him.
“Fucking Christ! Some days are just fucked. God dammit!”
With a flurry of movement, Isabella grabbed her coat from where she’d thrown it on the sofa and jammed her arms into the sleeves.
Alicia breathed a sigh of relief, glad Brady couldn’t lecture her on all the reasons she shouldn’t blame herself.
“Izzy, what is it?” Brady walked to her and clasped her shoulders with both hands. Instantly, Isabella’s movements slowed to a crawl and she heaved a deep sigh.
Alicia’s heart clenched at the display before her. Brady was the best thing to ever happen to Isabella. He was the calm in her soul, the root beneath her that kept her holding on. Alicia was envious of the connection the two had.
Once upon a time, she’d fantasized of her own knight in shining armor coming into her life. Now, she figured love and happily-ever-after were not all they were cracked up to be. She couldn’t keep herself safe. How the hell would she ever keep a husband or children safe in the world she lived in?
“Alicia?”
Pulled from her own thoughts by the sound of Isabella’s voice, she lifted her gaze to her cousin’s face. From the sadness and anger within her gaze, the call she’d received couldn’t be good.
“What is it?”
“Connor was on the phone. I have to get over to the Hopeful. Hannah’s been hurt.”
Alicia’s breath hitched at the thought of her friend, Hannah Isaacs, being injured. The Hopeful Shelter took in the homeless, helped battered and abused women seek another place to live, to escape an abusive husband or significant other.
Hannah helped so many women in their town, and even in surrounding areas, she deserved a medal for her goodness and her constant caring of others. She was a godsend to many children, abused women, the homeless.
“What’s happened?”
“I shouldn’t even be telling you this….”
“Save it, Isabella.” Alicia moved closer to her cousin. “You can’t give me vague answers and then just quit! We’re friends. What’s happened to her?”
With a hard sigh, Isabella met her gaze. “She was found this morning by one of the shelter’s volunteers. I don’t have all the details yet, but she’s on her way to Memorial Hospital. She was beaten and possibly raped.”
Alicia grabbed the back of the couch.
Dear God—evil, it never stops.

Desperate to make sense of it all, he’d headed straight for Isabella’s and her support. Her gaze made him seem ten feet tall, even though he never thought he was really in the same league with her.
That night had brought a new level to their relationship neither had been expecting. One moment he had been crying in her arms over the six-year-old boy who’d captured his heart in mere seconds, the next they had been on the floor of her living room having sex and breaking a lamp in their exuberance.
Those gymnastics of ours again. “Hey. Earth to Brady.”
At the sound of her voice, he realized he had been staring at her without speaking. “I’m here, babe. Just thinking,” He reached over to move the strands of hair away from her temple, and smiled as he gazed into the ocean of her blue eyes.
“You seemed far away. What’s got you so pondersome, hmm?” She snatched an M&M off the bed. He watched her mouth as she chewed the tiny morsel, feeling his cock twitch. He remembered the first time she had wrapped her mouth around him, sucking him until he had emptied himself dry.
“Nothing too important. Just thinking about the first time we had sex,” he informed her, a Cheshire-cat grin on his face.
Watching her face rise with color, Brady couldn’t help but wonder when she would ever stop blushing around him. After everything they’d done together— hell, the bathroom antics still scorched his nerves—he thought her blushing days were long over.
“By the way, Detective Knowles.” Mumbling around a red M&M he picked up and popped into his mouth, he continued, “Where did you learn the little trick of using a door to enhance your gymnast abilities, hmm?” Crunching down on his M&M, he watched myriad emotions wash over her face.
Embarrassment, pleasure, and wonder spread across her face, and after a few moments of silence, he didn’t think she’d answer him.
“I was inspired, I suppose. Being with you brings out emotions in me I never realized I had.”
She didn’t look him in the eye as she answered. He lifted her chin and brought her gaze to his. Unsure how to respond to her declaration or the soft, content look, he responded the only way he knew how.
Leaning forward, still holding her chin, he captured her lips with his own.
Delving his tongue deep in her mouth, he poured out all the desire, passion, and confused emotions he had, too. He hoped she would receive the message that he did care and felt the same, though he was unable to voice it, and eased his lips away from hers.
“You taste like M&Ms, babe.” Licking his lips for effect, Brady caught the grin blossoming on her face.
“Really?”
As she smiled coyly, he had to wonder what she was up to. He didn’t expect her words to be spoken in such a husky voice. “Make me melt in your mouth, not in your hand, Brady.” Her gaze held promises he wasn’t strong enough to ignore.
He claimed her mouth once again, laid his body over hers, and pressed her back into the mattress. His hands slid over her left hip, fingers slowly working their way to her sweet center, he didn’t hear the shrill ring until she pushed against his shoulders.
“Brady…phone. I have to get the phone.”
She eased out from under his hard body. He watched Isabella put the handset to her ear and listen.
He rolled onto his back and covered his eyes with one arm, unable to keep from feeling a bit of anger over the interruption. Damn, what he wouldn’t give to throw the damn thing against the wall right now. He wanted more time tonight with Bella, with no interruptions, but the rigid posture of her back said their night together was over. Duty called. She could go from hot seductress to kick-ass detective in mere seconds. He loved to watch her in action, but wanted to keep the seductress all to himself just a bit longer.
You got it bad.
For once, he didn’t contradict the nagging little voice in his head.
