Happy Wednesday Friends! Welcome to another week of teases!

Special thanks to Angelica Dawson for rallying authors together to share teases every week.

This week’s tease comes from an **Untitled** WIP, (unedited) and is the sequel to GUARDING MIDNIGHT.  Readers meet FBI agent Frank and Charlie in book 1 of the CDN Muscle series, and their relationship has had many, many ups and downs. Here, he’s returned after a long absence. And Charlie’s life is turned upside down.

“Come on in. No danger. Just an asshole who decided to crash my place.”

Charlie followed Shree up the stairs and in to Marc’s apartment. The dark furniture always saddened her. she thought there should be lighter colors in such a small room but Marc refused to let her do a makeover. His bedroom area was closed off behind another dark fabric, but she didn’t see anyone else in the room. She couldn’t help noticing the sink full of dishes in the kitchenette in the corner. Her friend really needed a woman in his life. The thought came and went quickly considering he pined for one woman and she wasn’t ready for any relationship with a man.

“Sorry for spooking ya. I tried your phone,” Marc nodded at Gavin.

“I left it in the car since we’re leaving soon. What’s going on?”

Marc eyes Charlie, pity clear on his face. “Sorry, kiddo,” he reached out to the curtain hiding his bed, and pulled it back.

“Fuck me,” Gavin’s voice boomed around the work-in-progressroom.

Charlie stumbled, her back hitting the wall. She righted herself, breathing fast, staring at the figure on the bed.

What the hell was he doing here?

She’d assumed he was still off fighting bad guys somewhere when Shree told her they’d never received an RSVP from him. Though, a man like him would probably never reply in such a fanciful way. And she didn’t want to admit that she’d been coyly watching the door all day to see if he’d just show up. With him like this now, pale, blood covering his white dress tshirt, wasn’t how she’d imagined seeing him again.

“He’s been shot. Clear, through and through. Wrecked stitches from what I can see.” Marc’s voice sounded like a whisper to her ears since the throbbing in her head grew louder with each passing second. Her body was numb, nothing seemed real. Everyone’s breathing even echoed around her.

“Shot?” Gavin stepped closer, and leaned over the bed, then opened one side of the shirt.

Charlie caught her breath at the sight of the bloody bandage across his side.

“Are you okay, Charlie?” Shree’s arms came around her shoulder.

Charlie nodded, her mind on the conversation between the men.

“Maybe a couple days old would. He shouldn’t be traveling like this. Fucker’s bleeding all over my bed, was out cold like this when I came in. Haven’t been able to wake his sorry ass.”

The whirring sounds filled Charlie’s head, like a fan on high. Just whir, whir, whir, spinning and not cooling her down. Her skin sweated. Palms wet, she wiped them on the wall she leaned against.

This – him, here, blood – it shouldn’t be happening.

This week’s tease comes from a WIP. The second book for my Canadian Muscle Series. It is untitled at the moment, and it’s going well. In book 1 — Guarding Midnight — you met Charlie & Frank, this WIP is their story.

Frank’s been in and out of Charlie’s life for years since GM, and she’s had enough of it. While her heart and mind tell her to let him go, her body (and her heart too though she won’t admit it) can’t resist the man. Frank is quite enthralling, and exasperating, but I’m having so much fun!! He’s really surprised me.

Here’s just  a little bit of an unedited tease with them…

“Look, baby, without you in this storm of a life, I’m lost.” His eyes pleaded with her to understand. Charlie gripped the counter hard. Damn him for always making her want WIPthings she couldn’t have. Not the way she wanted anyway.
“I come back here — to you — every time because it’s a helplessness I can’t squelch. You’re the light in the dark side of me, Charlie.”
Snap, crackle, pop. Every crackle in the walls around her heart exploded in her ears. Every coat of cement she’d spent months carefully building threatened to tumble as they weakened.

Mid Week Tease: “He’d finally accepted that he was destined to be Alpha of the pride.” #MWTease

This week’s tease comes from a WIP, a shifter story, which is my first! I had so much fun writing it. I just did a final polish and made additions to it, and it is out being critiqued. I hope to have it submitted in the next week or so.

Here’s a peek inside, FIGHTING FOR HONOR…

Welcome to Okanogan Valley
Dominic let out a long, deep breath as he passed the sign welcoming him back to his hometown.
Despite his inherent instinct to remain solitary, it was time to return home.
Not exactly excited to be back but knowing it was unavoidable, he drew back on the throttle, and accelerated down the open road. The tall trees and dense forest rushed by as he pushed on, his back aching some from being on his Honda Shadow for the last three days.
Five years since he’d been here and yet the route was just as familiar as if he’d ridden it yesterday.

work-in-progressThe years had gone by slow yet also quickly. Time hadn’t healed all his wounds from his father’s untimely death, but the twenty-seven year old young man Dominic had been, had grown into a man. And he’d finally accepted that he was destined to be Alpha of the pride.
Though it was his rightful spot, he needed to ascertain the direction the vulnerable pride had taken, and if his cousin would step aside easily.
The motorcycle lurched as he changed gears quickly. Thinking of Kenneth right now was not the best avenue to take. He’d heard what his cousin had been up recently, and the urge to wrap his hands around the little shit’s throat was strong.
He’d left the pride in Kenneth’s capable hands—so he thought—and all he’d done was take advantage of his position.
Being a class A-asshole did not breed a great leader.
Dominic didn’t know who he was more pissed off at—himself for asking Kenneth to help him out or Kenneth for being fuck-up. The new awareness he should have been more diligent of keeping tabs on the pride gnawed at his nerves.
Winding down the empty road, he couldn’t help but admire the beauty of the mountains around him.
Seeing the large beautiful hills and valleys crawled into his heart, wrapping around his soul, and reminded him of all he’d left behind. The rich lands belonged to his family, to the pride, and had for many generations.
His father loved mountains, probably even more so than Dominic did. Thanks to years of exploration and adventure, Dominic knew every inch of the lands of his homeland.
His father, Drago, was the first Alpha ever in the pride of panthers. Although they tend to be a solitary animal, his father had rallied that they band together, in the fashion of other cats and create a unified pride. In this day and age, his father had campaigned; we are too vulnerable alone. We need to unify and protect our kind from looming extinction.
Glancing down at his watch, he punched the motorcycle faster in order to make it in time. Today was a very important moment for him and his remaining family.
He was home for good. And come hell or high water, he’d make everything right again.

Mid Week Tease: “…straight up or dirty?” #MWTease

This week’s tease comes a story I am finished and just polishing up. It’s connected to DARE, and is Candy’s story. Once I’m done all the fixing up I can, I’ll be submitting it, thinking the end of this week.

Candy has just hit town, and met the local bartender who…well let’s just say, she’s not used to men like him …

© Kacey Hammell, 2015
“Ma’am?”
His husky tone pulled her from her thoughts.
She let out a light laugh. “Sorry. Daydreaming. Yes please. And…” Gulping down the last drops of her drink, she slid it across toward him. “Don’t call me ma’am. I’m not that old.”
He shrugged and nodded when the man a couple seats over, tipped his empty glass toward the bartender. Grabbing up an empty glass, the bartender pulled on the tap and filled it with beer. Candy shuddered. She hated beer. The saying “beer tastes like horse piss” ran through her mind making her chuckle. She’d never tasted horse piss but she supposed it was as good of a description as any. Who’d ever had the guts to try the animal urine must have been out of their mind.WIP
“You’re a woman. It’s polite to use ma’am if I don’t know your name,” the bartender commented and set the beer down in front of his customer. Grabbing her glass, he rinsed it and set it in front of him.
“Did my brother make it straight up or dirty?”
“Pardon me?” The word dirty coming from his lips was like a jalapeno pepper in her mouth…hot, powerful, and rich.
“Your daiquiri. Drew and I don’t always make drinks the same. Wondered how he made yours. I tend to make them dirtier than he does.”
Ice water is what she needed, not another aggressive alcoholic beverage. There was no way in hell she could resist.
“His tasted straight up I guess. Why don’t you make mine as dirty as you’d like?” Brow arching, she grinned. His delectable lips twitched, and he started mixing.
“Are there some secret ingredients in there I should know about?”
His tanned hands moved fast, lifting this bottle and that, adding a couple green leaves, and shaking some red powder into a blender. The strawberries were added last.
Impressive. She’d never witnessed a place that used fresh ingredients like this.
“I never share my secrets,” he winked.
Spectacular. He was even better looking playful and enjoying his work.
“How long have you been working here? You seem pretty great at your job.” To her own ears it sounded like an asinine compliment, but she was trying to make conversation. Anything to spend more time with him.
“About thirty-some years. Been working here since my stepdad owned it.”
Ahh, right. The stepdad. She knew about the connection. Now wasn’t the time to get into that.
“I’ll warn you though, darlin’,” After emptying the contents of the blender into her glass, he set it down in front of her and leaned against it on his elbows. “It is pretty potent. Spicy and might make the hair on your arms stand up. But it’s satisfying and very pleasurable.”
She’d bet a lot of money that many things he did would be pleasurable and satisfying.
Lifting the glass, she stared at him and took a healthy sip.
Hmm, potent and very warm. Minty and…was that cinnamon she tasted among the many strawberries? And perhaps a faint taste of ginger? What a glorious and refreshing version of a simple daiquiri.
“Wow,” she took another sip. Then another.
“You like?” He leaned in closer, his light yellow eyes twinkling.
“Definitely. I like it very much.” Candy inched forward. “So delicious. The tongue started tingling, then the burst of all those flavors exploded.
“Right in my mouth,” As she whispered the last part, he narrowed his eyes, then grinned. “I aim to please.” With that, he nodded to a customer at the other end of the bar. He stopped at the end counter beneath the long lines of bottles and hauled out a large bag.
Men didn’t walk away from her often. She fought the urge to take her compact from her purse and check herself over.
